SPOTLIGHT ON OUR EAST KENT COAST 015 So cool to be on the Kaz Russell-Graham T
he 350 miles of coast and Kent beaches are attracting increasing numbers of holidaymakers, but are we
looking after our coastline and its seaside inhabitants or are we in danger of taking our beautiful coastline for granted? Thursday 8th June is World Oceans Day – a timely reminder to get curious (and caring) about our amazing coast. Check out these events on your doorstep for how you can get involved:
Thanet Coast Project
• A World Ocean Day walk on Thursday 8th June takes the form of a planned stroll around the Kingsgate coast, exploring reefs and caves, chalk cliffs as well as seeking out clues of marine life. Meet at Botany Bay at 6pm.
• Summer Seashore Safaris: Who wouldn’t love to look deeper into Thanet’s fascinating rock pool wildlife? These events are a treat for families with children aged four-11 – but don’t forget to wear
suitable footwear for rocks and pools. Events last two hours with a suggested donation of £1 per person (identification sheet and equipment provided). Variety of dates, venues and times – for more information visit the Thanet Coast Project website at
www.thanetcoast.org.uk
• Marine Conservation Society Beach Clean, 15th-18th September We can keep beaches beautiful and clean by collecting our own rubbish, or picking up a few extra pieces. However, this annual event, one of the largest weekend ‘calls to action’, does something more. Recorded beach litter is compiled into a national database to assess our beaches over time. Events are run by the Thanet Coast Project, with equipment provided. Check for information and events closer to you nearer the time – and look out for other locally organised litter picks. Every little helps!

Kent Coast With the news that nine Kent beaches have been awarded Blug Flags, there is more
reason than ever to explore everything there is to see, do, discover and enjoy along our East Kent Coast. So whether water sports are your thing or you fancy a bit of culture and art, or it’s music, food and drink that’s your passion, check out our round-up
or windsurfing, or even SUP (stand up paddle board) – the fastest growing water sport, according to owner Nick Pardoe. “It complements sailing and windsurfing; you cannot do SUP in the wind as you get blown back – but you need wind for sailing and windsurfing, so it’s great to do both. Also, it’s chilled – less of an adrenaline boost.” What are you waiting for? Visit www.
