Behind the design: Henley

Tradition meets modern day at Neptune Canterbury with the new-look Henley kitchen that’s fresh and versatile – and offers far greater potential than before

H

enley used to occupy the realm of traditional country kitchen. It was defined and solid; a kitchen that perfectly fitted a design niche.

The word ‘niche’ revealing that its audience was somewhat narrow. We knew Henley could do more. So we looked at what worked, what didn’t, and what we wanted it to become. We agreed on more versatility, more ingenuity, more modernity and a little more confidence. If we had to describe Henley’s new aesthetic we’d say ‘urban loft meets country barn’. It translates at both ends of the spectrum, but is also understood somewhere in-between. Everything you know and love about Henley is still there – you can still create a beautifully made oak kitchen to sit within a heritage country residence. But this is Henley upgraded – and it offers far greater potential than before.

This is Henley

The new-look Henley explores colour and new cabinet design. Hand-painted in Snow with a Mist interior, we found inspiration in some of our most successful, high contrast kitchens (like the Suffolk in Charcoal by Sims-Hilditch).

High-octane, dramatic design isn’t all about deep and dark shades though, so we did the reverse and re-imagined Henley in a crisp, contemporary and ultra-clean light. • The paleTTe Snow combined with Mist and a touch more of the Smoke palette sit back perfectly with Henley. They draw out the beautiful characteristics of the oak whilst adding an architectural feel. • The exTerior As a pale stock colour, Snow also allows for ease of repainting and it will give us a competitive edge in a marketplace teaming with bright white kitchens. It’s a shade that appeals more widely.

• The inTerior The Mist interior brings both softness and further practicality in production but also for everyday use in customers’ homes. • The design Looking beyond colour and finish, gone are the curves, ornate skirting, cornice and under-worktop mouldings (although these are still available for customers who prefer the traditional Henley). These have been replaced by a carefully considered collection that feature square corners and detailing, a high contrast work surface, blackened bronze hardware, and a big step-up in cabinet functionality.

The lifestyle

• hardware We loved the addition of blackened hardware in the industrialised Henley kitchen at the autumn/winter 2016 press event created by the marketing team. Developing that idea to suit the painted Henley, we’ve designed a line of blackened bronze handles, hinges and catches that include Barlow, Lennox edge pull handles, cabinet internals and drawer rods, amongst other accessories, so the high-contrast look works at every point.

• workTop We’ve opted for a new honed black worktop with a tall up-stand that will form part of our new collection of work surfaces. It’s the most dramatic option but it’s what pulls the entire look together. • Mixed Finishes The Snow painted finish and the exposed oak complement each other beautifully. Don’t be afraid to mix things up a little by using Snow for the island or full-heights. The kitchen can take on a softer and more contemporary feel. With Carter accents and blackened

hardware, why not introduce darker contrast colours on walls or customise the cabinets to suit a more masculine feel?

Henley encapsulated

All in all, the new Henley is clean, fresh and versatile. The cabinet improvements allow greater freedom in the design and make it a viable solution for the smaller kitchen as much as the large. The Snow-painted finish provides a contemporary edge and should generate great commercial appeal, whilst not losing the moody masculinity of the press show that can be easily recreated with some cabinet customisation.
