“You may not always feel the presence of a good leader

and visionary, but their guiding influence can always be seen in your work. The same can be said of a father. Never one to force his ideas on others, Don Longwell,

successful father of four and founder of Mill Pond Publishing Inc. and Fitness Business Canada magazine, has always been and continues to be that subtle influence behind the scenes–giving advice and contributing ideas to any group he participates in. As his son, I can testif that being raised by such a father

has shaped a strong, independent and loving family. His influence is now evident in his 10 grandchildren. In the early days of Fitness Business Canada, I was always

amazed at how many people in the industry knew Don. Today, now five-years retired from the business, I’m still amazed at how many people in the industry ask about him and pass on their best wishes…they oſten seek me out to pass on these accolades. This is the legacy a father leaves. Not of being a tycoon

of industry, but of being a good friend and helper to those in need. I could not ask for more.” Stephen Longwell, general manager, Mill Pond Publishing Inc.

“FIC is eternally grateful to Don Longwell for his guidance

he Canadian Fitness Industry Leadership Award is Fitness Industry Council of Canada’s most prestigious honour. It is given annually to an FIC member who has proven to be a passionate in-

and influence in the creation and support of our industry association. It was Don who brought to light the importance and need for a public policy trade association. Since our inception, Don and Fitness Business Canada has been one of our strongest partners. Don has been integral in keeping the fitness industry connected through his publication. What he started as a simple newsletter grew into this country’s primary fitness business publication. He has always been hard working, passionate and dedicated to is work. Don saw the importance in keeping fitness clubs connected and ensuring that our industry had the chance to expand and grow while being provided with up-to-date knowledge. It is great to see the Longwell family living up to his legacy and continuing to serve the fitness industry. His contributions have been substantial; and as such, we are honoured to present the 2017 Canadian Fitness Industry Leadership Award to Don Longwell.” David Hardy, president, Fitness Industry Council of Canada

“I first met Don 15 years ago when I started working

with canfitpro. I was immediately struck by his genuine enthusiasm for the Canadian fitness industry. I was also impressed by the vast network of people he not only knew, but who deeply respected him. Don is, and always will be, a welcome sight at events anywhere he is found, for everyone who knows him knows they’ll be greeted warmly. Best wishes to you Don, for all the great things you have accomplished and for the legacy you continue to build.” Rod Macdonald, vice president, canfitpro
