71 Sport Aeron take chargeHeavy defeat for Aber

Mid Wales League - Division 1 Aberaeron

4

Hay St Marys 2 ABERAERON started the

game on Saturday (Jan 28) with five changes to the team that beat Machynlleth two weeks ago. Sion Clarke and Anthony Evans

returned from suspension, while Thomas Jones and Gareth Severs returned to the side in place of Dan James and David Evans, who were both unavailable. The safe hands of Leighton

Daniels were back in goal after Barry Edwards’ needless red card in the previous game. Hay St Marys started brightly as

Aberaeron took a while to settle into the game. Chances were few and far between in the first half until a Gareth Severs corner found the rising Sion Clarke, who headed powerfully into the top corner. After the break, Aberaeron took

full charge of the game as Anthony Evans surged into the opposition penalty area and headed into the path of Severs who deftly lifted the ball over the oncoming keeper to double their lead. The third goal soon followed

with a superb one-touch team move involving six players before Mikey Gornall volleyed home from the edge of the box. Aeron pressed on for more goals and as Thomas Jones pulled a shot at goal, it fell at the feet of Severs who turned and slotted it home calmly. Aeron then rang the changes

with three subs but lost their rhythm, allowing Hay back into the game. A Hay corner was intercepted by

Rhodri Edwards, who failed to clear, and Hay found the net. They soon had a second goal

through a penalty following a foul by Gornall. Aberaeron saw out the game

Aberystwyth Town

and ran out deserved winners. They now move on to face Montgomery in the Central Wales Cup on Saturday (Feb 4). Manager Jason Jones was

extremely pleased with the result, saying: “I felt we set the tone for the game from the first whistle as we knew Hay’s strengths; they’re a very good side who like to play. “The game plan was to press high

and frustrate Hay as much as possible and not give them time to settle as they have a very good midfield and that’s exactly what we did. We stopped them playing and forced them to play the long ball game, and with our centre backs that was fine by us! We didn’t lose a header! “I felt the boys worked well in

transition from attack to defence, which ultimately led to our first goal. Though Hay caught us on the break a couple of times and could have scored on 40 minutes but Leighton made a cracking save at his near past. That was the only save he made in the first half.

“We decided at half time to go at

Hay for the first 10 mins of the second half, and to take full control on of the midfield. We put together pass after pass and Hay couldn’t live with us. Severs, who played really well, took his goals with confidence which was good to see. “Some of our link-up play and

movement off the ball was brilliant and man of the match Mikey scored one of the best we’ve scored so far. “So, at four-nil up, we might have

been guilty of pushing for more rather than shutting up shop. Hay scored a good goal with 20 to go and then got a penalty decision which was soft. “We then saw the game out

and could have been more goals. A cracking result; that’s tw on the bounce now, pushing us back up to fourth spot in the league.”

Horwood earns win for Under 19s Merthyr Town

ABER TOWN’S Under 19s

travelled to Merthyr on Sunday (Jan 29) to play their third game in the League Cup group stage, hoping to get the three points that would all but guarantee a place in the semi- finals. It was the visitors who started the

game on the front foot, creating a few chances but weren’t able to test the Merthyr Town goalkeeper. Aber were rewarded for their

bright start just over 10 minutes into the game, when Harri Horwood won the ball just inside the opposition’s half and played the ball forward to Geoff Kellaway, who moved the ball on to Liam Doherty. He cut inside the last defender and

drove the ball across the keeper into the bottom left corner of the goal. Horwood and Jack Rimmer both

narrowly missed chances to double Aber’s lead as the home side started to get a foothold on the game. But, thanks to some good keeping by Oliver Farebrother in goal, the score remained 1-0 at half time. Merthyr came out strongly in the

second half and tested Farebrother in goal a few times, before Aber almost went 2-0 up through Liam Doherty, but his volley was saved by the keeper, who recovered and pulled off another point blank save to deny Horwood. The home side threw everything at

Aber in an attempt to find an equaliser, but luck was on the visitors’ side as Merthyr struck the crossbar three times in the last 10 minutes of the match. However, there was still time for

one more chance for the Martyrs, but they were denied yet again by Farebrother, who got down quickly to his left to tip the ball around the post and ensure that Aber picked up all three points.

Aberystwyth Town Prestatyn Town

1 5

ABERYSTWYTH TOWN

suffered a heavy home defeat to Cymru Alliance Champions elect Prestatyn Town on Saturday (Jan 28), as they progressed to the Welsh Cup quarter-finals. Goals from Sam Rodon (og, 30

mins), Noah Edwards (42 mins) and a second half hat trick from James Stead (52, 60, 81 mins) sent the Denbighshire Seasiders through. Luke Sherbon’s goal on 66 minutes

was scant consolation for Town who were well beaten on the day. On a bright and breezy winter’s

afternoon, the game started with chances coming at both ends. Home keeper Chris Mullock got down brilliantly to save Michael Parker’s header, then at the other end Jamie Crowther released Cledan Davies down the left, and when he crossed for Chris Jones unfortunately the shot was blocked. Luke Borrelli fired a snap shot

just wide, and then Stead crossed for Jack Kenny to aim a header straight at

Mullock. Aber’s best chance came from an

exciting move culminating in Elliot Scotcher crossing for Jones, but his goal-bound effort drew a smart save from Prestatyn keeper Carl Jones. Davies then released Borrelli

through the middle who beat the offside trap, but his deft lob was just about saved by Jones. Then, on the half hour, came a devastating blow for the hosts when Sam Rodon received the ball from Mullock and passed back into an empty net to give the visitors the lead. Stead’s curling effort was tipped

wide by Mullock, but then three minutes before the break, good work by Jack Kenny saw the ball break for Noah Edwards, and he smashed home a second to stun the home supporters. Manager Matthew Bishop changed

tactics after the break but the visitors’ tails were well and truly up, and with the Prestatyn fans singing in the Dias Stand, Mullock had to deny Kenny and Jordan Davies. On 52 minutes, the game was won

when a right wing cross fell perfectly for Stead to finish in space, and Aber were floundering.

A response came when Dan Alfei

sent in a right wing cross which evaded Borrelli, but was acrobatically netted by sub Kostya Georgievsky, only for the linesman’s flag to deny the Swansea youngster a super strike. Georgievsky went close twice

more but then on the hour, Stead beat the hosts’ offside trap and curled home for 0-4. Six minutes later, Borrelli’s ball

in was chested down by Rodon for Sherbon to smash home a response. Sub Jack Rimmer played in Alfei

down the right and his cross found Georgievsky who was so close with his effort, but to no avail. To be fair, the visitors were creating

chance after chance themselves with Kenny and Davies missing the target before Stead completed the scoring with nine minutes to go, having been once again set up by Kenny. This was an extremely below par

performance by the Black and Greens, leading to a devastating defeat, and they will need to find their form very quickly for the start of the Play Off Conference at home to Airbus UK Broughton on Saturday (Feb 4), kicking off at 2pm.
