League 3 West A Cardigan Llangwm

CARDIGAN moved up to

second in the table as they breezed past Llangwm on Saturday (Jan 28) with a 60-0 win. Sion Hughes got on the

scoresheet for Cardigan in the first half while Emyr Harries added one conversion. Alun Jenkins, Llyr Jones and Ben Rogers all went over as Cardigan

claimed a bonus point before half time and held a 22-0 lead at the interval. Jenkins went over twice more in

the second half to complete his hat trick as they kept the pressure on. Hughes went over for his second

try while Carwyn Thomas also bagged a late brace of tries. Kieran Hurley was the final name

on the scoresheet as he scored their 10th try of the match, while Harries added four more conversions to complete a comprehensive afternoon.

League 3 West C Llandybie Aberaeron

THE EARLIER encounter

in September between these two teams had seen Aberaeron throw away a 17 point advantage to eventually lose by four points in the last phase of play, so this game provided the Seagulls with the ideal opportunity to gain revenge; although there is little at stake in the final league standings with restructuring planned for next season. It turned out to be a close, hard-

fought game with a flurry of yellow cards dominating the clubhouse discussions after the final whistle. Aberaeron were unfortunate to be on the wrong end of some dubious refereeing interpretations, and in particular the new instruction on high tackles, which on this occasion resulted in two yellow cards for influential lock Tudur Jenkins, contrary to general consensus from both camps. Nevertheless, having played for

60 minutes with 14 players, this was a truly brave performance with the line-outs functioning particularly well, with Sion Evans being accurate throughout. Aberaeron were quickly into

the groove with an early penalty by outside half Rhodri Jenkins, and this was followed by a try from flanker Aaron Lewis, prominent throughout, resulting from a rolling maul.

instant, with number eight Rhydian Jones crossing and Aled Tomasson adding the conversion. Llandybie gained the advantage

with a penalty minutes from the break, but Aberaeron then suffered the yellow card heartache with the referee brandishing a brace on the half time whistle. The numerical supremacy was

to prove crucial as Tomasson added another penalty, only for Jenkins to hit back with his second. The home side’s final penalty was the result of Jenkins’ second yellow card, which was roundly contested and this opened up a six point margin. Aberaeron came back strongly in

the last quarter with Gethin Hughes and Alistair Severs carrying well and were denied twice by the referee, who was unable to confirm the groundings in what looked perfect tries. They were finally rewarded

following a line-out through prominent replacement

flanker

Dafydd Davies, but alas the elusive final points failed to materialise. The points may well go the way

of Llandybie but both sets of players and supporters were in agreement that they were fortunate that the success was heavily influenced by dubious refereeing decisions. The youth team, however, had

more success with a comprehensive seven-try 40-12 defeat of Haverfordwest, in front of a sizeable local support.

WRU National Cup Carmarthen Quins Newcastle Emlyn

63 10

NEWCASTLE EMLYN were

dumped out of the WRU National Cup as they were well beaten by a strong Carmarthen Quins side on Saturday (Jan 28). This first round WRU Cup

clash lived up to expectations as the Quins turned on a very polished performance and demonstrated the huge gulf there is between the top eight in the Premiership and a mid- table Championship side. The semi-professional Quins

were quicker, more physical, and accurate in everything they did and a number of Emlyn mistakes were comprehensively punished by the home side, who scored a total of nine tries, all of which were converted. Emlyn started positively and

retained possession through a series of rucks as they went at the Quins from the first whistle. With skipper Alex Williams leading by example, they were soon camped in the Quins’ 22.

Unfortunately, this period of

pressure also led to the first of Emlyn’s injuries when second row Dan Havard had to leave the field with a dislocated shoulder, to be replaced by Bleddyn Davies. Havard has been in tremendous form this season and his loss will be a grievous blow to the red and whites. Such was the start Emlyn had that

it took until the 12th minute before the Quins reached the Emlyn 22 metre area and opened the scoring with a well- worked team try, which eventually saw centre Callum Price cross under the posts for a try converted by outside half Craig Evans. The veteran Evans had an excellent day with the boot, controlling events well behind the dominant home forwards and having a 100% record in converting

six of the Quins’ nine tries. Emlyn’s woes continued when, in

the build up to that try, their outside half Dyfan Dafydd suffered a serious injury to his elbow and was replaced by Barry Thomas. The rest of the half was basically

dominated by the Quins and Emlyn had to defend for all their worth. Centres Richard Hope and Tomi Jones worked really hard to stem successive Quins attacks but the Quins added to their score at regular intervals with tries from Price again, number eight Shaun Evans, an interception from winger Morgan Griffiths and a penalty try, all converted by Evans. With a half time score of 35-0,

things looked ominous for the Emlyn side with the pressure being exerted by Quins when Emlyn had the ball, making life comparatively easy for the home side. Winger Morgan Griffiths added another three tries to his total and full back Gavin Thomas got his name on the score sheet, with Evans converting two of them and centre Josh Batcup converting the last three tries. Emlyn though never gave up

and the forwards came more into the match as the game went on. Number eight Brynmor Jones had some powerful runs down the field and was well supported by flanker Joel James and second row Ryan Morgans. Not to be outdone, full back Shaun

Leonard put in some huge clearance kicks downfield and was always alert

to the possibility of a counter attack with the ball in hand. When hard working flanker Gethin Davies had to leave with a dislocated shoulder, he was replaced by Gareth Thomson, who lasted some 10 minutes before having to leave the field with a broken jaw.

The last 20 minutes of the game

proved to be Emlyn’s best period of the game. A new front row of Emrys Davies, Tom Curry, and Neil Elworthy brought fresh legs and energy to the Emlyn cause as the three of them were eager to carry the ball forward. A good run by Leonard saw

him brought down in the Quins 22, Brynmor Jones combined well with Llyr Jones down the right wing and suddenly Emlyn were playing with a great deal more confidence and accuracy. A quickly taken penalty by

replacement scrum half Mike Jones on the halfway line saw him catch the home defence flat footed and winger Llyr Jones was on his shoulder in support to take the scoring pass for a fully deserved try for the red and whites. From the restart, Emlyn retained

possession and went through a series of rucks as they made their way upfield and, showing great patience and control, eventually worked the ball out to the right wing where flanker Joel James was able to cross in the corner for the final try of the game.
