Village News

THE COMMITTEE of Barnt Green’s new WI line up before their first official meeting at the village’s Baptist Church, which attracted almost 80 women to a needle felt workshop. The group had also seen an excellent turnout at its taster sessions, and will

now meet on the third Thursday each month at 7.30pm. Pictured: President Julia Waters, Nicola Denning, Jackie Greenhalgh, Cathy Dakin, Alyson Williams, Kim Neale (not pictured: Helen Rogers). Village View: Page 19

BARNT GREEN residents and all those passing through have been learning to live with daily traffic chaos after the village was split in two by road closures. The long-heralded blockade of

the railway bridge at the junction of Bittell, Kendal End and Fiery Hill roads has caused predictable problems for road users.

But the pain for pedestrians has been eased by the creation of a walkway past the works site on Bittell Road and up Fiery Hill Road. The initial suggestion that pedestrians from the Cofton Hackett side walk up Cherry Hill Road and down the Cherry Hill Drive path to the station was soon deemed unacceptable. Even the alternative adds another

ten minutes’ walk for people wanting to get from one side of the railway line to the other. Meanwhile, road users have been finding the routes around the blockade to be very slow-going at busy times, with traffic heading to use Hewell Lane queuing back along Sandhills Lane to the Sandhills Green roundabout in one direction and back up Fiery Hill Road to Twatling Road in

the other. And Cherry Hill Road is see- ing a heavy flow of traffic taking the shortest route around the closure. The work is primarily being carried

out by Cala Homes as part of the planning requirement for its Fiery Hill development, and involves creating

better visibility at the junction. But a number of other utilities works are being carried out at the same time, as well as the realignment of the mini- roundabout at the railway bridge. The project is expected to take another two months.
