PUPILS DIG IN FOR M
Sarah Rees reports from the Oakalls and Parklands.
embers of Finstall First School’s Eco Club helped to plant a new cherry tree
in their village, replacing one that had to be removed for safety rea- sons last year. The original tree was on the
corner of Arundel Road and Ches- worth Road and was much-loved by local residents. When it lost a large branch, the remainder of the tree split into three pieces and Bromsgrove District Council’s Tree and Landscape Officer authorised its immediate removal. District Councillor Caroline
Spencer expressed sadness at the demise of the tree, but said she was thankful that it had not fallen on a weekday when parents and children would have been walking to or from school. After hearing how much resi-
dents, children, parents and staff at the school missed the tree, Coun Spencer requested a replacement, which was agreed by Worcester- shire County Council’s Highways Department – and planted with help from Year 2 pupils in the Fin- stall First School Eco Club. Pictured: Eco Club members

38 The Village February 2017 COMMUNITY CHRISTMAS
LARGE CROWDS gathered for the sixth Oakalls festive concert. The Blackwell Brass Concert Band (pictured below) accompanied the carol singing for the second year running and residents enjoyed mulled Tardebigge cider, mince pies and candy floss. The arrival of Santa (courtesy of
the Bromsgrove Lions Club) was the highlight of the evening for the many children in attendance. Resident Eve O’Connor, who has
lived on the estate for 13 years, said: “This annual event is a great opportunity to bring the commu- nity together and gets everyone into the Christmas spirit. A big thank you to the people who take the time to organise it.” Coun Spencer and County
Councillor Kit Taylor also thanked those residents who volunteered to help on the evening, selling refreshments and ensuring the safety of the road closure.
