Bill Harvey, transportation director for the Honeyoye Falls – Lima Central School District

in New York State, said he does not currently use predictive analysis for parts inventory. With three mechanics, Harvey maintains his inventory with Transfinder’s Servicefinder program. “Our fleet of 47 buses isn’t big enough to use predictive analytics,” says Harvey. “We have a (maximum/minimum) system to maintain our inventory, and our auditors love it. Te pro- gram shows what bus each part went on. When we get low on an item, the program kicks out a re-order form.” Harvey added that maintenance staff set intervals for replacement of various parts, whether they are wiper blades or alternators. Te goal is to get the most use out of a part and to replace it before end-of-life to avoid downtime. In addition to school buses, the garage has a cooperative agreement with the local department of public works to maintain a variety of vehicles, from dump trucks to ambulances. Some fleets, such as operated by Grace Cascade Christian School in Medford, Oregon are so small that they don’t employ their own mechanics. Transportation Coordinator Richard Robinson has four buses, and those are used mainly for field trips and sports events, not dai- ly routes. Robinson worked out a deal with a local garage in town, and said he is fortunate to have a large International truck repair shop nearby. “I try to stay informed by reading bus and truck magazines, and keep up with things like emissions rules in California,” said Robinson. “I was a mechanic and used to own a service station, so I’m always in the shops talking with the mechanics. But if a bus breaks down at two in the morning going over the mountains, I get the phone call.” 

“Te preventative maintenance schedule based on failure analysis works well for a larger fleet. We can anticipate replacement needs and spot other problems.”

—Michael Shields, Salem Keizer Public Schools in Oregon
