Te staff also reviews work orders to identify commonalities, and the mechanics use Excel spreadsheets to keep track of data. “We can sort them by type of bus, the part, the driver, anything we need to know,” Shields added. “We have weekly and monthly reports, and we also chart year to year. Te preventative maintenance schedule based on failure analysis works well for a larger fleet. We can anticipate replacement needs and spot other problems. For instance, we had a particular failure rate and discov- ered that on one type of bus, the distributor caps had a moisture leak, so we changed brands. Some of our buses kept needing a jump start, and we figured out that it was the video system draining the batteries, but it depended on how long the bus sat between routes.” Longview School District #122 in Washington state uses Zonar GPS units that provide distances and speeds,
and Fleetvision software from Tyler Technologies that works with Zonar to allow mechanics to forecast the type of services each bus will need. “We don’t have telematics for engine temperatures and those types of things, but we keep a good inventory with Fleetvision,” said Transportation Manager Rick Lecker. “We have a high/low base set that lets us see what we need. We also have local vendors who handle certain products for us like brake shoes, batteries, filters, and tires. Tey’ll come in and talk with the shop coordinator, and they’ll do a quick check of the items that they’re responsible for, but it’s all backed up by Fleetvision software. Te shop coordinator will also do an annual bid for these items. Te school bus industry is changing all the time. We prefer to be pro-active instead of reactive. We’ve got million-dollar cargo in the buses.”
