hen the words “telecommunications” and “informatics” are combined, the result is telematics. When telematics combine with fleet operations, the result can be increased productivity


and reduced labor costs, with improved maintenance and a safer fleet. Tese vehicle communications systems can monitor the location, status and behavior of a vehicle and also send, receive or store data in real time for transportation departments. Besides telematics assisting in routing, there are features such as the ability for diagnostic trouble codes to be delivered to mechan- ics, and the ability to track fuel consumption or excessive idling, to name a few. Tese systems can assist mechanics in scheduling pre- ventative maintenance, thus reducing breakdowns and downtime. Keeping the parts inventory at optimum levels is also very import- ant. Telematics and predictive analysis can help with keeping the garage, and buses, running smoothly. Scott Pauley handles the parts ordering for the Kanawha County School District in Charleston, West Virginia. Using Zonar and Fleetpro helps keep 195 buses on the road. “Tese systems are just phenomenal,” said Pauley. “We’re using predictive analytics to help us maintain inventory. We can pull


reports to get an average of what is being used and that’s how we stock our shelves.” He explained that on-site parts inventory is kept to a minimum to ensure warranty is recovered at its full potential. Most of the district’s parts are used within 60 days from the time of purchase. Kanawha also logs all of its tires and how much life each school bus gets out of them. He added that Fleetpro helps determine a problem in the fleet, how to best repair it and monitor the warranty. “We are the only county in West Virginia that is recovering labor dollars for warranty repairs done at our shop,” he added. “Tis is like running a business. When the state comes in, we can run any report we need, and we use year-end reports for state and Medicaid reimbursements. We even use Fleetpro for our mechan- ic’s production rates.” Kanahwa is also working with Cummins to track school bus diesel particulate filters, as there is not much existing data. “For big trucks there is (data), and the first suggested cleaning for them is 160,000 miles,” Pauley said. “But for buses it’s about 50,000 to 60,000 (miles).” Salem Keizer Public Schools in Oregon operates a fleet of 270 school buses and 500 total vehicles. “We use predictive analysis
