UTAH HOTEL NEWS

Little America (opposite the Grand America) in Salt Lake City has completed the first phase of its renovation. All of the Tower Rooms in the luxury hotel’s 17-storey tower have been revamped, while four presidential suites have been added. The Garden Rooms will be refurbished by the first quarter of 2017.

One of Utah’s top luxury ranches, Cougar Ridge Lodge in Torrey, has recently

inhospitable terrain can be brutally hot in the summer, but with a bit of planning and lots of water, it is an exceptional time to take in awe- inspiring scenery as well as engaging in sporting activities.

Equally important as the parks in this region is Dead Horse Point, which sits 2,000ft above the Colorado River on the edge of the Canyonlands National Park. It’s also famous for being the backdrop for the dramatic last scene in Thelma and Louise, where the dynamic duo seal their fate by driving off the cliff and into oblivion. The views are sensational and not to be missed.

ON THE WATER

The late spring and early summer months provide the optimum time of year to try out river rafting. The Sorrel River Ranch will organise activities including a full-day trip to Westwater Canyon on the Colorado River, which includes rafting over white water rapids such as Onion Creek, Cloudburst and

Ida Gulch. I opted for the more relaxing option of calm water kayaking. Paddling through the water with canyon walls towering above me, it was so serene that I was blissfully unaware of the outside world. The ranch also organises paddle-boarding and jetboating, so there is something wet and wonderful for everyone. Our next stop was Arches National Park, which for my money is one of the most breathtaking parks in the US. Several of the formidable rock arches are visible from the road: Park Avenue, the Three Gossips and Courthouse Towers to name a few. The road through the park goes on for miles and there are impressively daunting formations at almost every turn. My personal favourite was the Delicate Arch and seeing this natural creation is well worth the hike it takes to reach it (although the 100F heat could prove a turn off for many). Hot-air ballooning over the park is now a popular pastime and an

launched Casitas. Separate from the main lodge, the seven Western-styled bungalows have large bedrooms with either a king-sized bed or two queen- sized beds, spacious bathrooms, a living room with plasma screen TV, kitchen and private deck.

Montage Deer Valley now offers commissionable guided day trips by air to Utah’s four national parks: Arches, Canyonlands, Bryce and Zion. Prices start at $8,000 per person, including air transfers, premium land transportation and lunch prepared by a chef.
