SEVILLE SEVILLE: YOU SHOULD KNOW SEVILLE BY NOW I
ANTONIO JIMENEZ, MANAGER, SEVILLE TOURIST BOARD
n 2015, Seville received more than 100,000 visitors from UK – a 25% increase on 2014. This is predominantly thanks to
the direct British Airways flight that connects Seville and London. EasyJet and Ryanair flights also make Seville closer to London, which means that in less than two and a half hours you can be in a destination with diamond- blue skies and more than 3,000 hours of sunshine a year: the capital of the southern-most region in Europe. To describe Seville only in one word,
we would say ‘joy’ – this perfectly sums up the character of the Seville inhabitants. Average temperatures here are 18C-20C, and the food is based on tapas, with small local dishes such as gazpacho, jamón Ibérico (cured Iberian ham) or ensaladilla (special mayo-salad). The caracoles (snails) culture comes out mainly in summer time, while your morning marmalade will almost certainly come from the bitter-orange trees of Seville. There are plenty of other reasons
why Seville is appealing to ever-more tourists. It is the cradle of flamenco, a dance recognised by Unesco as an Intangible Cultural Heritage, and Seville has inspired more operas than any other city, including Carmen, The
Marriage of Figaro and The Barber of Seville. So whenever your client visits, the chances are there will be a good flamenco or opera performance. Seville is rich in terms of historical monuments recognised by Unesco: The only Archives of Indies in the world, also the biggest Catholic Cathedral in the world and the oldest Royal Palace in Europe still in use. Those familiar with Game of Thrones might know that the exotic water gardens of Dorne are Seville’s incredible Alcazar. Seville is life, culture, monuments,
gastronomy, flamenco, diversity, charm and joy! And all who visit, love Seville.
