Microbiology Laboratory Manager • £46,625 – £57,640 • Permanent


We have an exciting opportunity for a Microbiology Laboratory Manager to be at the forefront of leading the diagnostic microbiology service in a large district general hospital serving south Hampshire. You will have the opportunity to participate in the procurement process for a strategic commercial partner through a pan-microbiology Managed Service Contract and prepare the department for an impending UKAS accreditation assessment.


The department provides a diagnostic service to patients attending Portsmouth Hospitals NHS Trust, South East Hampshire CCGs, the MOD, other local NHS Trusts and Microbiology laboratories. Clinical services include renal transplantation, hepatology, haematology/oncology, respiratory, sexual health and intensive care for adults, paediatrics and neonates.


Our clinical microbiology laboratory is CPA accredited (awaiting UKAS accreditation visit) and is an approved GMC and HCPC/ IBMS training centre for Specialist Registrars, Clinical Scientists, Biomedical Scientists and support staff. We encourage CPD participation via in-house accredited meetings and external training courses.


The department performs 580,000 tests per year and is currently equipped with a wide range of modern technology and automation including: blood culture and mycobacterium analysers, urine screening analysers, MALDI-TOF and antibiotic susceptibility analysers, a random access serology analyser and a range of molecular analysers for an increasing repertoire of tests, including enteric bacteriology.

Chief Biomedical Scientist Haematology Salary: £49,465 - £58,978 pa (depending on experience) plus an allowance of £3,504. 37.5 hours per week


Applications are invited from experienced and dynamic chief/senior biomedical scientists with at least 5 years post- registration experience. Te successful candidate will lead the haematology team, manage and develop the service and be part of the pathology management team.


Applicants should have a comprehensive theoretical and practical knowledge of haematology, excellent team-leadership skills and a good understanding of ISO15189 requirements. A higher qualification in haematology is required.
