ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING PROGRAMME – 4 JUNE 2016 • Registration and coffee: 10.00–10.30 • Lecture: 10.30–11.15 Catching the last train from Liverpool Street: the Dreadful Visitation and the New Churchyard Don Walker, Senior Human Osteologist, Museum of London Archaeology Construction work as part of the Crossrail project provided an unprecedented opportunity to excavate a large burial ground, the New Churchyard (1569–1739), in a busy thoroughfare outside Liverpool Street Station. The large skeletal sample promises to tell us something of the health and disease of the population in this period. This was also the first opportunity in Britain to investigate a burial ground known to contain several thousand plague victims. Ancient DNA analysis promises to reveal new insights into the evolution and epidemiological history of the disease.
