CONTINUING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

The newCPDscheme:howwill it differ fromthe current system?

Following the announcement last month of the imminent introduction of the new IBMS CPD scheme, Ben Rimmer provides further information for members on the transition from the old to the new scheme. Further information is available on the website (www.ibms.org).

The current system of CPD codes and credits will be replaced with categories, which will reflect Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and Science Council CPD categories. In order to gain a CPD diploma, you will need to complete 24 activities across three categories. The CPD cycle will be two years rather

than the current five-year validation period and you will no longer be required to submit a personal profile and reflective statement for CPD validation.

QWhat are the categories that will replace CPD codes and credits?

A The new CPD categories will be: • Work-based learning • Professional activity

• Formal education • Self-directed learning • Other

Q How will I know which category to use? A As well as reflecting HCPC and Science Council CPD categories, the new IBMS CPD categories are also related to the old IBMS CPD codes. The list in Table 1 shows how CPD codes used on the current scheme can be linked to the categories used on the new scheme. However, this is a guide and members can select which category they feel is best suited to an activity.

QWhat are the benefits of moving from code and credits to categories?

AUsing categories rather than codes and

credits for the new CPD scheme will make it quicker and easier for members to add CPD activities to their CPD portfolios. Using categories will also make it easier to use activities recorded in their IBMS CPD portfolio as evidence that they have met HCPC and Science Council CPD standards. Members will be able to track how their CPD activities are meeting HCPC and Science Council CPD standards as they complete their IBMS CPD diploma. The move to categories will also

encourage members to complete a broad range of activities that will enhance their knowledge and skills, with a shift in focus towards identifying and achieving learning outcomes.

Q How will I achieve an IBMS CPD diploma on the new CPD scheme?

A To achieve a diploma on the new CPD scheme, members will need to undertake a range of activities during the validation period and reflect on how their CPD has enhanced the quality of their practice and benefited service users.

To achieve a diploma on the new CPD scheme you will need: • activities listed in a minimum of three categories, with a minimum of one activity listed in each category

• a total of 24 activities • reflection on a total of 24 activities

For activities to count towards the award of a diploma on the new IBMS CPD scheme, activities must be: • less than two years old • completed after the start date of the diploma.

Last chance to submit your IBMS CPD portfolio for validation under the current scheme

In response to member feedback, the IBMS will be moving to the new CPD scheme later this year. Owing to the changes in the way CPD activities will be recorded and the numbers and types of activities required to achieve a diploma on the new CPD scheme, we recommend that IBMS members with a significant number of credits on the current CPD scheme work towards

270

achieving a CPD diploma before the move to the new CPD scheme comes into effect.

If you have reached 250 credits, please submit your application for CPD validation to cpd@ibms.org no later than 13 May 2016. Please note that CPD portfolios will not be accept for validation under the current IBMS CPD scheme after this date.

You can find out more about the transition to the new IBMS CPD scheme in the April issue of The Biomedical Scientist and on the website (www.ibms.org/ cpdchanges).
