The 2016 Southern California Yachting Association’s (SCYA) Midwinter Regatta ended after two weekends of winter sailing on Feb. 13-14 and Feb. 20-21 Twenty-five yacht clubs and associa- tions hosted the event, which featured the new two-weekend format. Results are provided below.
American Legion Yacht Club was the host venue for 18 PHRF boats in Newport Harbor. The club held three classes raced over two days for bragging rights. In PHRF A class Amante from Lido Island Yacht Club won the first place spot. The Richley family skippered the boat. In the B fleet the honors went to Balboa Yacht Club’s John Schultz aboard Linstar. In the Non Spinnaker class the line honors went to Rag Jag skippered by Dan Rainville sailing for Balboa YC/American Legion YC.
Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club also hosted the Harbor 20 fleet in Newport Harbor. Twenty- eight boats raced in three classes, depending upon the skill level of the skipper. In the A
fleet Patches with skipper Walter Johnson and crew Michael Mixon of Balboa YC were victorious. In the B class Newport Harbor Yacht Club boats took the top four spots with Roxanne Chan and Dave O’Hara taking first place. In the C fleet Gale Pinckney also of Newport Harbor YC skippered her craft to the winner’s podium.
Balboa YC hosted the Senior Sabot competi- tion on Feb. 20. Fourteen boats turned out for the event. While all the sailors said a little more wind would have been appreciated the conditions did not seem to bother Mark Gaudio, Bahia Corinthian YC, who finished with three bullets to take first place. Gaudio also won the regatta last year and now has his name on the perpetual trophy twice. Mike Bartel and Molly Lynch in second and third place, both representing Balboa YC, followed him. Scott Finkboner of Mission Bay Yacht Club took the perpetual trophy for the high- est-ranking skipper older than 65. Finkboner was in fourth place in the A fleet. LOS ANGELES — It’s time for the annual George Griffith Racing Series, an event attracting racers from local yacht clubs to spend three days on the water as they battle it out for the coveted trophy. This year the three-race series has been
changed to feature three inverted start, pur- suit races, according to the host club, Los Angeles Yacht Club. The change was made to meet the
requests of racers. The new George Griffith Racing Series course chart will feature both a new start area and a new finish area. A new perpetual trophy has also been

Dave Hood (Commodore), Will Durant (Rear Commodore) Wendy Corzine and Lisa Meier competed on the Long Beach Sailing Foundation’s fleet of Catalina 37s and were motivated to enter the regatta with the hopes of making it to the Ficker Cup. You see, the top two finishers in this
year’s Ficker Cup are invited to this year’s WMRT ISAF Grade 1 Congressional Cup, April 5-10. Although Meier was unable to com-
pete, she was able to hand over her helm duties to crewperson Ian Paice who has competed match races for several years. When congratulated for his win,
Dickson was a bit reluctant to take all of the praise. “This is Alex Jacobs [San Diego
Yacht Club] team,” said Dickson. “He’s the skipper. I was just the helmsman.” The Southern California winter
weather could not have been better, with sunny skies, temperatures in the high 60s and low 70s and consistent breezes between 7-13 knots. “It was stupendous that we had

such perfect conditions at this time of year,” said Dickson, “which let us get in 13 races in two days.” Finishing in second place was Long
Beach YC Commodore Dave Hood who fought hard with Dickson in the best- of-three finals beating Dickson in the second match, but losing in the third race by no more than a couple of boat lengths. When asked about any special
event during the regatta that stood out in his mind, Dickson responded, “The biggest thing was that the team hadn’t even met each other until Saturday morning.” Dickson followed up by saying that,
“Everyone should experience sailing with as great a group of people as this team is.”
dedicated to the winner of a Yacht Club Challenge. The best three race finishes for competing yacht clubs will be used to deter- mine the overall yacht club team winner. A party at the Los Angeles YC clubhouse
