Lake Mission Viejo Yacht Club had a good turnout for the SCYA Midwinter competition on Feb. 20. A total of 17 boats participated in the regatta. 87th SCYA Midwinter Regatta comes to a close


The 2016 Southern California Yachting Association’s (SCYA) Midwinter Regatta ended after two weekends of winter sailing on Feb. 13-14 and Feb. 20-21 Twenty-five yacht clubs and associa- tions hosted the event, which featured the new two-weekend format. Results are provided below.


American Legion Yacht Club was the host venue for 18 PHRF boats in Newport Harbor. The club held three classes raced over two days for bragging rights. In PHRF A class Amante from Lido Island Yacht Club won the first place spot. The Richley family skippered the boat. In the B fleet the honors went to Balboa Yacht Club’s John Schultz aboard Linstar. In the Non Spinnaker class the line honors went to Rag Jag skippered by Dan Rainville sailing for Balboa YC/American Legion YC.


Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club also hosted the Harbor 20 fleet in Newport Harbor. Twenty-eight boats raced in three classes, depending upon the skill level of the skipper. In the A fleet Patches with skipper Walter Johnson and crew Michael Mixon of Balboa YC were victorious. In the B class Newport Harbor Yacht Club boats took the top four spots with Roxanne Chan and Dave O’Hara taking first place. In the C fleet Gale Pinckney also of Newport Harbor YC skippered her craft to the winner’s podium.


Balboa YC hosted the Senior Sabot competi- tion on Feb. 20. Fourteen boats turned out for the event. While all the sailors said a little more wind would have been appreciated the conditions did not seem to bother Mark Gaudio, Bahia Corinthian YC, who finished with three bullets to take first place. Gaudio also won the regatta last year and now has his name on the perpetual trophy twice. Mike


Bartel and Molly Lynch in second and third place, both representing Balboa YC, followed him. Scott Finkboner of Mission Bay Yacht Club took the per- petual trophy for the highest-ranking skipper older than 65. Finkboner was in fourth place in the A fleet. Finishing in first place in the B Fleet was Paul Williams of Balboa YC.


Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club hosted the Mercury Class with 10 boats entered. David West scored a first place and Randy Smith came in sec- ond. Don Whelan who came in third place represented San Diego Yacht Club.


California Yacht Club hosted 27 boats in four One Design Fleets. In the combined Tartan 101 and J/109 Fleets, David Brown, Cal YC, skippered his Tartan 101, Callisto, to first place. Alejandro Bugacov and Eugenio Cingolani of Cal YC dominated the Star Fleet. Members of Cal YC also won first and second places in the 11-boat Martin 242 Fleet. Peter Stazicker in Trolleycar took First Overall with Mark Sands and crew on Sandbox taking second place. Take Five, in the J/24 Fleet, proudly took home first place, with Thomas Tunberg representing Santa Barbara Yacht Club on Bullet came in second. After racing on both Saturday and Sunday, sailors enjoyed hors d’oeuvres and a no-host bar at the club.


Channel Islands Yacht Club hosted the PHRF Fleets of 11 boats. Rod Abbott on Troublemaker won Spin A. In Spin B, Asylum, skippered by Dave Trude, took first place. Dominating the Non Spin class was Joe


an Olson 30, skippered by Jeremy Quinton with Scott Clapp, won first place. In the C class, Doug Helm aboard Woodeye took the honors and in the Super 30 Class Ruckus took first place with Brian Werner at the helm.


Lake Mission Viejo Yacht Club held their SCYA Midwinter competition on Feb. 20. Racing in light breezes 17 boats and their skippers and crews fought for SCYA trophies. In the Portsmith A class Horst Weiler along with crew Grahm Newman scored first place with Mark Gladkin and Connor Gladkin in second. In the B Class Rear Commodore Emmet Rixford and Vicki Rixford were tied for first place with Commodore Frank Roberts. Emmet won the tiebreaker. In the Sabot class Jaden Talay won first place with four bullets out of five races.

Coronado Yacht Club. Mile High Klub won the contest with Phillip Infelise of Southwestern Yacht Club getting four first place finishes and a second.


Dana Point Yacht Club hosted three classes of PHRF boats. In the PHRF B class Grey Goose


Long Beach Yacht Club has a history of hosting some of the area’s premier sailing events. This year for the SCYA Midwinter Regatta was no exception. They hosted the Farr 40 event in which four of the leading southern California boats fought for first place honors. This year’s event was won by Blade 2 skippered by Mick Shlens sail- ing for King Harbor Yacht Club and


Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club. In the competitive six-boat Schock 35 fleet Strategem skippered by Mark Hinrich of Alamitos Bay Yacht Club took first place.


Mission Bay Yacht Club gets the honor of hosting the most entries since 2010 in the Midwinter Regatta. A total of 90 boats raced See SCYA page 31
