Duncan McIntosh Co. acquires Los Angeles and San Diego boat shows

NMMA’s West Coast offices will go dark in the spring.

By Parimal M. Rohit

IRVINE — A seismic shift in California’s boating world occurred when the 2016 calendar flipped to March, as the Duncan McIntosh Co. purchased the Los Angeles and San Diego interna- tional boat shows from the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA). Representatives from Duncan

McIntosh Co. and NMMA announced the transaction via separate letters to stakeholders and interested parties on March 1. “This is a huge responsibility, and

we’re honored NMMA felt we were up to the task of carrying on the tradition. The San Diego International Boat Show takes place in just three months. If you have already placed your order, we have it and will begin moving for- ward with the show presently,” Duncan McIntosh, company president of Duncan McIntosh Co., stated in his let- ter.

NMMA will shutter its West Coast offices in the next few weeks, accord- ing to Thomas J. Dammrich, the asso- ciation’s president.

“We will maintain a strong presence

in California, however, without these shows on our roster, we will be closing our NMMA West offices later this spring,” Dammrich said. “While the NMMA West offices are closing and we’re transitioning the shows, NMMA will continue serving the needs of the marine industry on the West Coast. David Dickerson and our state govern- ment relations team will remain active in all California legislative and regula- tory efforts.” McIntosh’s letter explained how the deal came together. “A funny thing happened at last

month’s Miami International Boat Show. Right after the opening break- fast, NMMA’s president Thom Dammrich and I had an impromptu meeting in the aisle. The result of our meeting could significantly impact the boating market in Southern California. The Duncan McIntosh Co. purchased the Los Angeles and San Diego inter- national boat shows from NMMA,” McIntosh wrote. The long-time publisher of the

recreational boating publications shared his experience being a boat dealer at the Los Angeles Boat Show before its days at the Convention Center in Downtown L.A.

“I can remem- ber being a very young boat dealer standing under an old brown canvas tent at the Pan Pacific. Outside, rain was pouring down – the water was up to my ankles – while inside it was also pouring down rain through the aging top. But who cared? It was win- ter and this was the big Los Angeles Boat Show,” McIntosh said. Those seeking to place orders for the upcoming San Diego Show should contact the Duncan McIntosh Co. office at 949-660-6150. The 2016 San Diego International Boat show will run June 16-19 at the Sheraton Hotel and Marina on Harbor Island. “It is business as usual and all exist-

Company,” Dammrich said. McIntosh stated his company would also be consolidating its two boat shows in Newport Beach into one. “Our immediate plans for this year

ing agreements for 2016 will be hon- ored by Duncan McIntosh Company. If you have already contracted for space, we have assigned your space contract and deposit to Duncan McIntosh

before the San Diego Show, is to com- bine the two Newport Shows into one big show at Lido in May and eliminate the Newport September show. The L.A. show is many months away and we plan to take our time and poll our industry friends and colleagues about what they would like to see in Los Angeles,” McIntosh said.
