“March has left us sighing In cold and chilly blast, April’s tears have fallen May has come at last!”

Here we are in the merry month of May, about to start summer’s cycle once again. Long Beach Pride is the demarcation that begins the whorl of events that are unique to the LGBT community. Pride throughout Southern California, dare I say it... Gaily travels across the state all summer long, spreading colorful rainbows of solidarity and hard-fought change.

We’re enjoying a wonderful, “We did it” mo- ment in time that many of us, myself included, couldn’t begin to imagine possible. We enjoy marriage, family and a sense of security that generations marched the streets for and in truth, an entire one died over—our right to exist in all our glorious forms. Celebration of these moments is vital, because it marks the significance of what’s been accomplished, reminding us of how far the banner has been carried and of those who carried it. We have worked hard, for every single bit of it.

Cyndi Lauper reminded me of this, in our conversation, when I asked why she has been such an avid LGBT supporter. Something she continues to do and has, over the course of her 30-year career, in particular for our LGBT youth. “When I learned that up to 40 percent of youth experiencing homelessness in America are LGBT, when only seven percent of the general youth population is LGBT, the decision to focus my energy to help them was easy. These are our kids! They are our future teachers, doctors, parents and so much more. It is our job to stand up for them and make sure they can be the happy, healthy and productive adults that they want and deserve to be.” Thelma Houston, again made me think about

these things when she talked about the early days of the AIDS crisis, “...back in the day when AIDS did not even have a name and my friends were dying, I started going to so many funerals. A lot of us banded together to help our sick friends with the basic necessities, just to keep them going. We just did what needed to be done to help out our friends.”

Both are examples of powerful collaborations and powerful allies who have helped us in the fight for equality and freedom. Something that has helped make the world a much better place and certainly something to celebrate.

The thing about change... Is that it is a journey and it is never complete. We have attained the right to marry, but with the recent passage of discriminatory laws in Mississippi, and North Carolina and quite possibly soon in Tennessee, it is a reminder of how vulnerable we can still be. People live in fear across the world, as some still do here at home. A point that has been driven home by how easily progress can be tarnished through fear-mongering and a win snatched away in a blink of an eye. Standing as a reminder that though we have much to celebrate, we are certainly not done and in turn, must remain vigilant. We can change the world, we did change the world and we must continue the work of changing the world.

So, enjoy the party... But, let’s remember to keep working, so we have reason to continue celebrating the journey.
