desert rage

are huge! Hunters is the place to count on for good drinks, great music and dancing. For more information, go to hunterspalmsprings.com. Thursdays at Toucan’s Tiki Lounge offers The Playhouse featuring queens imported from Los Angeles. Located just outside of Arenas (2100 N. Palm Canyon), this is a recently remodeled bar that has been around forever. It has a lovely Tiki design aesthetic that is terrific, with a really good show hosted by Tommie Rose. For more information, go to toucanstikilounge.com. Finally, I suggest checking out The Barracks

THE FLAMES OF MAY ARE UPON US ! It’s May in the desert and the streets are strewn with the remains of the White Party, Dinah and Coachella. Summer is ascending and with it the ultra-warm, 100-plus degree weather. While some of the desert’s best-known big events are done and gone, there are still a lot of regular events to attract locals and tourists alike.

THE FOLLOWING IS THE BEST OF WHAT’S HAPPENING IN PALM SPRINGS THIS MONTH: Carnival Cabaret is an old-fashioned drag show at Oscar’s Bar & Café at

125 E. Tahquitz Canyon Way in Palm Springs. Hosted by James “Gypsy” Haake, one of the oldest working queens in America... With a pedigree to prove it. This is a show of celebrity impersonations and runs Thursday through Sundays. For more information, go to oscarspalmsprings.com. The Purple Room at 1900 E. Palm Canyon Drive, features The Judy Show!

every Sunday in May. Michael Holmes plays Garland, as well as offering his interpretations of Carol Channing, Mae West and Bette Davis. The show is always packed and Holmes promises to keep you laughing... and his Garland is a knockout. For more information, go to purpleroompalmsprings.com. Thursdays, you can see more drag at Copa at 244 E. Amado Road in Palm

Springs. The Lipstick Show features Pinkie Meringue Shimmer and is hosted by Bella da Ball, a Palm Springs icon, wearing drag hair and gowns, but only lipstick (no other makeup). I personally don’t get Miss da Ball, but others enjoy her and she’s maintained popularity despite those of us that shrug our heads. For more information, go to copapalmsprings.com. Fridays is Noches Azul/Homo Estas at Georgie’s Alibi Azul at 369 N. Palm

Canyon Drive in Palm Springs. This show features an eight-piece band in this big, rambly club and is the closest thing you will see to a Latino Night in Palm Springs. Lots of guys including some “Se habla espanol” hotties. For more information, go toalibiazul.com Hunters at 302 E. Arenas in Palm Springs, is the place to see and be seen

on weekends. They import go-go boys like Dan Rizzle and Skip O’Brien from L.A., who are always amazing to watch. On Sundays, Jayla D. Foxx has a drag show that showcases local queens and is a rompin’ good time. Hunters is the gay bar that gets tons of straight girls on the weekend, so, consider yourself forewarned. They don’t hurt the good time crowd—but those damn purses

at 67625 E. Palm Canyon Drive... Especially on Sundays when all the leather grizzlies, bears and other guys who like to play seem to congregate. The bar is huge and is as cruisy as the Castro in the ‘80s. There will also be a crowd who likes a place like this and hotness abounds. The scent of testosterone fills the air and it’s busy from around 4 p.m. until dusk. For more information, go to thebarracksbarps.com. The play, Junk, opens at the Desert Rose

Playhouse at 69620 Highway 111 in Rancho Mirage, playing for the entire month of May. It’s a show about a couple of men, one younger and one older, who have to clean out the house of a recently deceased, gay friend. This world premiere is funny and touching and producers have been chatting up how excellent the production is. For more information, go to desertroseplayhouse.org. Cinco de Mayo weekend brings the Hot Rodeo

to the desert. The annual event offers a bevy of gay cowboys and girls to the desert. Rodeo has seen better days in SoCal, but, LGBT participants from all over the United States travel to the desert to participate in rodeo events and then party the night away. Most activities take place on Arenas Road, Palm Springs’ gay epicenter. For more information, go to psrodeo.org. I love to support small, local businesses and

these stalwarts make up the core of the LGBT community in Palm Springs and surrounding areas. Next time you need a close getaway in Southern California, come to enjoy the weather, have a great time and support them all!
