LA CAGE AUX FOLLES “I am what I am… I am my own greatest illusion.” La Cage Aux Folles is for anyone who loves the flamboyant and heartfelt show- case of laughter and song during a long lasting gay love affair between Georges and Albin mixed with the madcap circumstances of a son coming home to surprise his father with a fiancée. Originally winning many a Tony Award, add in the glitter and glitz of Tony Herman’s wonderful score and a troupe full of fabulous drag queens and you have the magic of this newly staged La Cage Aux Folles. The magnificent Harvey Fierstein wrote the book and now, the production is being presented on the 50th anniversary season at East West Players, which has been the nation’s premier Asian American theatre organization since 1965. Performances of La Cage Aux Folles run from Thursday, May 12 through Sunday, June 26. For tickets and more information, call 213.625.7000 or go to eastwestplayers.org.

AMERICAN IDIOT One word… Green Day. Oh, that’s two

LA BOHEME Feeling tragic and long for the emotive

expressions of a classic opera? The Los Angeles Opera at The Dorothy Chandler Pavilion has your ticket with a love destined for doom in the setting of impoverished Paris. Written by one of the masters of the genre, Puccini and considered one of his most-inspired works, La Boheme could remind one of the groundbreak- ing and much newer, musical RENT; it should as RENT as based on this classic tale of love and loss. Presented as an original L.A. Opera produc- tion, this world of bohemians will capture your heart in joy, sadness and loss in a timeless and emotional manner. This production hits the stage on Saturday, May 14 through Sunday, June 12 as La Boheme takes you to the streets of Paris and the love affair of Mimi and Rodolfo and the other young artists who encircle the drama. words. With lyrics by front man, Billy Joe Armstrong who wrote the book as well; with Michael Mayer, American Idiot is a phenomenon of rock majesty as Green Day brings their musical vision to the stage of their uber-successful and Grammy-winning album of the same name. Don’t bring your little brother or sister to this one as the lyrical content is full of “fu#k” so to speak. Yet, for us mature ladies and gentlemen, let the music and the lyrics of social injustice and of the hu- man condition in the 21st Century bring out the intellect and the punk. Ready for some sex, drugs and rock n’ roll? Join the audience through Sunday, May 15 at The La Mirada Theatre for The Performing Arts. 42ND STREET A one-two-three, five, six, seven, eight…

TAP. The glorious 1932 Warner Brothers film musical was transformed into a stage musical capturing the delightful music and lyrics of Harry Warren and Al Dubin. With this fascina- tion and glorification for the movie musicals of the 1930s, 42nd Street tells the now standard tale of the little “chorus” girl proving her mettle and talent to become a “star!” on Broadway. This backstage story of hard work that always looks flawless in delivery, is presented at The Pantages Theater from Tuesday, May 31 through Sunday, June 19 in Hollywood [a perfect setting for the stage production] and brings all those songs such as “We’re in the Money” and “I Only Have Eyes for You” amid countless others to deserved life, once more. For tickets and more information, call 888.803.9646 or go to hollywoodpantages.com.

A RAISIN IN THE SUN Originally debuting on Broadway in 1959,

A Raisin in the Sun was then awarded the New York Critic’s Drama Circle Award for best play that year. Lorraine Hansberry created the script and it poetically and truthfully captures the emotions and realities of a black family living in a subdivision of Chicago. Beautifully written and daring for its depiction, A Raisin in the Sun has stood the test of time and is being presented on the stage of The Long Beach Play- house Mainstage Theatre from Saturday, May 21 to Satuday, June 18. The age-old issues of political and social awareness and just how to fit in to a black and white world make for a bril- liant night of theatre that still rings true today on many levels in this portrait of dreams and family drama.
