EDUCATIONAL FACILITIES SCHOOLS Cotter COTTER— The Cotter


School District covers 35 square miles in western Baxter County, including the cities of Cotter, Gassville and the outlying area. Cotter provides a compre-


hensive academic educational program for students in grades K-12 that complies with the Standards for Ac- creditation as established by the Arkansas State Board of Education. The enrollment for Cotter


Public School District is approximately 685 students, 70 percent of whom are eligi- ble for free or reduced-price meals. An additional 40 stu- dents are enrolled in the ABC and Head Start preschool programs at Cotter. Cotter School District em-


ploys 60 certified staff and 46 support staff, and runs eight bus routes. Student test scores have continued to improve over recent years, specifically in elementary math, junior high math, algebra and career and technical education. Results of the 2014 Arkan-


sas Benchmark Examination showed Cotter students to be at or above the state average on most math, literacy and science exams, and above the regional average on most tests, as well. Students who are not proficient on Bench- mark exams are provided remedial instruction. The district offers an


opportunity for a strong academic education with Advanced Placement offer- ings in all four of the core academic disciplines. The

graduating seniors of 2014 were eligible for $853,032 in academic scholarships for post-secondary education programs. The Cotter Junior High


Quiz Bowl Team finished first in region and second in the state competitions. The senior high team finished second in the region and lost in the quarterfinals at the state level. They were both invited to attend the National Quiz Bowl Competition in May in New Orleans. Cotter High School teach-


ers have been participating in Understanding by Design and Literacy Design Collab- orative training to help pre- pare them to think utilizing a backward design when plan- ning for student achieve- ment. Teachers have been focusing on writing and read- ing skills across the curricu- lum in order to better pre- pare students for college success. They have been utilizing skills gained to col- laborate on ideas of utilizing technology in the classroom. CHS has been a 1:1 school

named as an Arkansas Gifted and Talented Program of the Year in 2014. The Amanda Gist Ele-


mentary School has received an OEP Math award from the Office of Educational Policy of the University of Arkansas for 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014. Amanda Gist Ele- mentary also has been named an Arkansas Recognition and Reward School by the Arkan- sas Department of Education for 2013 and 2014, both years the award existed. The award is based on the


high academic performance of its students on state bench- mark exams.
