New leadership Mountain Home School
Board members unanimous- ly voted April 2 to hire Dr. Jacob “Jake” Long, who grew up across the state line in the Caulfield, Mo., area, to replace retiring Dr. Lonnie Myers as superintendent of Mountain Home Public Schools. At the time he was hired,
Long was acting superinten- dent for the St. Joseph, Mo., school district.
“I think his
Dr. Jacob Long
leadership style is going to fit very well in our commu- nity and with- in the dis- trict,” said Ben Strider, Mountain Home School Board presi- dent.
“I’m thrilled and excited
about it,” Long said. “We have a lot of programs that are great for our kids.” What does he see for the
future of the district? “My vision would be taking the programs and things that are doing very well and continue to improve on those,” Long said.
Strong educational background
Before being named act-
ing superintendent of the St. Joseph district in January, Long was director of student services and director of transportation and security for SJSD. Prior to joining the St. Joseph schools, Long had been an assistant principal at West Plains High School, a principal for seventh and eighth grade at Fairview R-XI, and assistant principal for grades K-8. He also was a health and industrial arts teacher at West Plains High. Long earned his bachelor
of science degree at Mis- souri Southern State Univer- sity, a masters of educational administration at Missouri State University, an educa- tional specialist degree at MSU, and a doctor of educa- tion degree at Saint Louis University. Long officially begins his
job on July 1, after Myers’ retirement becomes official June 30. The board approved a two-year contract for Long with a salary of $130,000 per year, plus in-district mileage for using his vehicle and the standard benefits for district employees.

How to get on the board agenda
Community members must submit their agenda requests, in writing, to the superintendent at least five working days prior to the school board meeting, which is at 6 p.m. the third Thursday of the month at the central office. The written request must be sufficiently descriptive to enable the superintendent and board president to fully understand and evaluate its appropriateness to be an agenda item. Such requests may be accepted, rejected or referred back to the individual for further clarification.
