Santa Rosa, CA. ~ As we all know, we need downtime be- tween busy schedules. In April’s issue, I had a garden experience. The truth is, it is a mini paradise of sorts. A place to take off my shoes and water the plants on the hot soil(when sunny) and feel the cold spray on my feet. It conjures up childhood memories when I grew a garden at age of 8 all by myself. The rich black soil around the tomato plants and trying to fi gure out how to start the water at the top of the garden and have it go all the way to the
bottom...all in one stream. Just now, it dawns on me that the paper goes that way too in its development before I go to
press...Making it fi t altogether. My current garden fl ows pret-
ty nicely. Four kinds of potato’s, three types of onion, two vari- eties of garlic, carrots, four dif- ferent specimens of table salad, fourth generation green beans, snap peas, cucumbers, grey & green zucchini, corn & wild to- matoes. All of this in a space no bigger than 40 feet x 20 feet. It even left room for
oregano(both Italian & regular), purple & green basil, chives, three types of thyme and a sage plant.
The Upbeat Times kind of
is like a garden. Variety is not missing for sure. I wanted to say thanks to all the writers who contribute, and new writers who have asked to be a part of this pa- per as of recent! So after a busy day of running around, I go to my backyard paradise or for a hike in one of our fi ne local parks, and think of what I can do next. One of the next steps I’m cur- rently undergoing is becoming Upbeat Times, Inc. What an in- teresting process indeed. Pretty
soon you will see in INK, our adjust- ed logo and some brand and
new looks content as
well as sections of the paper meant to entertain. I am ex- cited for sure. The goal is to make the paper more and more enjoyable, colorful and infor- mative, as most of
all...to make some- one’s day. To give them a good laugh or to have at least one piece of Upbeat’s contents inspire someone.
I admire all of my writers be- cause they all are a plethora of knowledge, humor and life. Raising children can also be hi- larious as I recently experienced at my daughters track meet. You really get to know the other par- ents after seeing them week after week, month after month. Since my child is a teenager, well, you all know, they’re like aliens from another planet sometimes, al- though I’ve never really met one. I imagine that this is what they might be like. I can’t repeat what the exact conversation was, but during a discussion, all fi ve of the parents in tandem were shak- ing their heads, saying, “Really? Yours is like that too?’ All I want to know is...’Was I like that too?’ Probably. The positive side to the story
is...they will all turn out fi ne and are already great people!
And then, sometimes they’ll
fi gure out why mom and dad are always out in the garden, or in the backyard, hanging out, talk- ing and laughing their heads off about the days trials and tribula- tions.

During court one busy day, the judge quietly passed the clerk a note reading: “Blind on right side, may be falling. Please call someone.”
Understandably alarmed, the clerk called for help before whispering to the judge that paramedics were on their way.
When I moved out of the house a bit past 16-1/2 years old, it was the best day of my life. When my daughter was eight or nine, she told us she is never moving away from home. This is when my wife & I looked at each other with raised eyebrows. Now as a teenager, our plan is to smother her with love and happiness and constant checking in. It drives her crazy! None-the-less, she cant wait to graduate and go off to college!
Our plan is working! We look
forward to going off to vacation when she goes to college! Woo Hoo! The best part
is..she a very lovely, well adjusted person with a great sense of humor, intelli- gent & full of hopes and dreams. That was the other half of the plan! Success!
May this issue fi nd you well!
Puzzled, the judge pointed to a sagging Venetian blind on the right side of the room and explained, “I was thinking maybe someone from maintenance!”
Be who you are and say what you mean. Because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter
don’t mind. Dr. Seuss
