Go To College ... continued from page 4
college, what are your expecta- tions about classes, professors, activities, work? Are you will- ing to commit two years to at- tain an AA degree, four or more years to receive a bachelor’s de- gree and even more if you want to go on for a graduate degree? Does your work ask for more than an AA degree? Do you need to have a bachelor’s de- gree and once that is attained, do you need a master’s degree or higher? What motivates you? Are you a disciplined per- son? Are you being encouraged by those around you to get a de- gree? If not, do you possess the self-motivation to do it on your own? Do you have the requisite skillset to do well in college? Are you prepared? Have you taken the courses you need to get into a college? Have you talked to a guidance counselor? Have you talked to friends and people who have gone to col- lege about their experiences? What did you think having lis- tened everyone’s stories? Does it sound like the right choice for you? Now having answered these questions, do you still wish to go or not go to college and why? I will be writing a se- ries of columns to guide you through the process of consid- ering college, assessing your passion to go, what to do once you made the decision, how to go about assessing that deci- sion, paying for it, and knowing
that it’s the right fi t for you. Not all colleges will fi t you. Some will fi t you better than others, but the key is to fi nd the college that you can get the most out of on a knowledge, growth and learning basis and also have some fun along the way. It will be my pleasure to help you along that path that I have taken myself. My background is as a college teacher, who has four college degrees (BA., MA, MPA, PhD.) from three differ- ent institutions, has taught at SRJC, public(CSU Chico and CSU Sacramento) universi- ties, and a private university (USC). I have also worked in what is commonly called the “real world” as opposed to the “ivory tower”, which is how many refer to a college or uni- versity. I have been an as an analyst, writer, human resource manager, small business owner and consultant. I have traveled this path for many years. I am also an academic coach help- ing others fi nd that college fi t or employment placement. I’m very excited about the prospect of us traveling on this journey together. If you have any ques- tions, please do not hesitate to email me at Drannecowden@
aol.com. Future columns will give you some guidance to an- swering the questions I have post above, ask more questions, and give you some very impor- tant information you will want

Sally was puzzled re- cently by the odd mes- sages she kept getting on her voice mail. Day after day, all she’d hear, from friends, family, and customers alike, would be their message and then they’d ALL say, “BEEP.” She discovered the solution to the BEEP riddle when she dialed her own phone
number. Her message said, “I’m not available right now, so please leave a beep after the message.”
