installs Subtle Beauty SUBMITTED BY: JOEY KNAPP OF SIMPLICITY IN SOUND, MILPITAS, CALIF. O
ne of the members of a local car-audio forum wanted to upgrade this 2013 Volkswagen Touareg TDI with specific goals in
mind: achieve a nice level of sound quality utilizing the OEM head unit, maintain as much room as possible in the cargo area, retain the spare tire area and achieve a look that completely flows with the vehicle’s interior. Te original intent was to keep the
build simple, but as the project progressed, the install team had to invent new ways to make a custom job look factory new. With the factory navigation head unit, the installers had to work with the stock signal source. For processing they used a Mosconi 6ot8DSP, with all tuning done from the front seat via a laptop. A remote bass control knob was installed into a blank panel behind the shifter. A set
of Morel Elate MW6 woofers went into the stock lower door location. Spacer rings were fabricated by match-routing the OEM speaker-mounting flange and coated with several layers of truck-bed liner to protect them against the elements. For the rest of the front stage, the team used a CDM880 dome mid-range and Supremo piccolo tweeters as A pillars.
