once they purchase the building, they plan to slightly shorten the showroom and make it fully inter- active. He wants their customers to be more engaged and have the opportunity to touch things and hear noises. “People say, ‘Your store it’s beautiful and your showroom looks good.’ But I want to do more for them. I want to add more installa- tion bays with the window tint and woodshop being on this property,” he said, the excitement in his voice palpable. “We’ve been paying rent for so long, owning the building would be a great step. Basically we want to reintroduce ourselves. That’s part of the dream over the next few years.” And Jawad has been dreaming about car audio since he was a teenager. As a kid, he said he was a “traditional” customer who kept upgrading stereo equipment in his car. At 19 he went to work for Elec- tric Avenue, which he described as

similar to Montgomery Ward’s elec- tronic division. He worked there for two years, before moving onto Sa- fari Audio, where he spent the next three years. Brian Hunt, his current partner, was installing car stereos out of his garage back then. “He built his customer base
and established Sound Depot and Performance on October 15, 1998,” Jawad recalled. “I’d wanted to open a business with Brian before I actually bought into Sound Depot, when I was 24. He basically started Sound Depot and his reputation was growing — he was a good guy who gave people really good deals. He’d already established himself.” So, it wasn’t a traditional
partnership, in which one person simply buys half of the business. Instead, Jawad suggested they become partners and offered up the money to move Hunt’s business to a larger location so they could really grow it — together.
