concentrate on only one of these prongs; only putting the right foods in (i.e., raw food diets, juice fasts) or only removing the awakened waste (saunas, colonics). We need to do both in the right balance to truly start to detoxify and feel better.
That bit was really important; so let’s clarify the two main principles of a true cleanse: 1) Awaken deep impacted waste through a hydrating and alkaline-rich diet that includes ample veggie juices/ smoothies, salads, raw and cooked veggies, and fruit.
2) Release the waste matter from the body by pairing denser foods such as meat, eggs, cheese, nuts, beans and grains with plenty of water-containing vegetables. Ensuring you’re moving your bowels two to three times a day (yes, really!) is a sign that you’re effectively moving awakened toxins out.
Of course these are all wonderful to implement but the first order of business before you can make some progress on the junk that has already accumulated in your body is:
Stop taking in more toxins!
To make a difference you simply need to bring in less ‘junk’ than you were
taking in yesterday. Some forms of junk to watch out for: • Processed/packaged foods with long ingredient lists
• Artificial sweeteners, flavours, colours, preservatives
• Hydrogenated/partially hydrogenated fats and oils
• Refined flour/sugar • Diet products (i.e. non-fat, low-carb, zero-calorie)
• Conventional cow’s milk/dairy products
• Factory-farmed animals and animal products
Basically: EAT REAL FOOD.
During the Christmas season there is more food and food variety than at any other time of the year; so you have ample opportunity to replace junk items for more delicious and detox-friendly options. Think raw dark chocolate instead of compound milk chocolate with artificial flavourings; sweet potatoes and pumpkin roasted in organic butter, sea salt and thyme rather than packet chips; wild-caught grilled Australian salmon with a beautiful tangy salad rather than traditional factory-farmed turkey; and juicy seasonal mangoes and tropical fruit instead of artificially-sweetened lollies.
As you eliminate more junk from your diet, while simultaneously replacing it with satisfying and nourishing alternatives, you will start to see improvements in your energy, digestion, weight, skin, and overall vitality. But wait! There’s still another part of
this detox equation, and that is the part when the toxins and waste actually exit the body! If you’re awakening lots of waste with a clean diet filled with hydrating and alkaline veggie juices, greens, raw veggies and fruits, but then failing to release that waste out of the body, horrific detox symptoms will arise. Read: headaches, breakouts,
How about meat, you ask? Have
your steak if you really want it – but opt for grass-fed and organic. How about pairing it with a nice big leafy arugula (also known as rugola, roquette, or Italian cress) salad with seasonal veggies, maybe even a little goat’s cheese if you desire, and a hearty helping of steamed asparagus, broccoli and green beans! You don’t have to be vegetarian to enjoy a detoxifying lifestyle. The key is in eating in a vegetable-centric way, regardless of your specific ‘diet’.
Remember: progress, not perfection.
