DECEMBER DETOXIFICATION

Cleansing at Christmas? It’s possible, and pleasurable! Holiday season indulgence can work hand in hand with gentle detoxification –

all it takes is a little know-how, an open mind, and some good quality raw chocolate. by Casey Conroy, Dietitian

DETOX. Just thinking about the word conjures up unsexy images of lemon and hot water fasts, and antisocial gall bladder cleanses leading to hours on the toilet. Maybe you’ve tried bentonite clay cleanses, or used herbal laxatives. Perhaps you’ve simply done a juice fast or three. One thing’s for sure – detox is probably the

last thing on your mind during the silly season! I invite you to consider how this year could be different. Keeping detoxification in your Christmas vocabulary can help you to enjoy the festivities without the red-eyed, bloated aftermath the morning after. Despite modern-day hype, detoxification or

cleansing is not a new fad. It’s been around for millennia and is still a daily part of life in cultures that have retained some of their traditional wisdom. I was in India recently and its citizens are masters of internal body cleansing. Some of the ways they get the junk out of the trunk would make the most staunch colonic hydrotherapist cringe!

WHY CLEANSE? Our bodies carry out detoxification on a cellular, organ, and system level all day long. However due to the increasing levels of stress we experience, environmental toxins, and the increasingly processed diets we eat, our natural detoxification processes can be overwhelmed by the burden of waste created by living in such acidic terrain. Our bodies were not designed for, nor

have they fully adapted to sedentary lifestyles, fast food, and 12-hour work days. So sometimes

You don’t have to be vegetarian to enjoy a detoxifying lifestyle.

The key is in eating in a vegetable-centric way, regardless of your specific ‘diet’.

• Yes to steak – but opt for grass-fed and organic

• Pair it with a nice big leafy green salad

• Seasonal veggies

• A little goat’s cheese if you desire

• And a hearty helping of steamed asparagus, broccoli and green beans!

our bodies need a bit of help. Deep tissue cleansing is a meaningful way to support your body, to clear up minor symptoms now that could lead to bigger symptoms later.

DO I NEED TO CLEANSE? Here are some signs that you may need to detoxify: 1) You have a bloated belly or swelling somewhere in the body

2) You’re irritable, moody, and find it difficult to cope with stress

3) Dull skin, or break-outs 4) Brain fog 5) Puffy eyes

Having great digestion and immunity, clear skin and a sharp mind are crucial during the holiday season. You’re going to need calm insight and resilience when confronting your cantankerous Aunt Mildred; being tired and moody just won’t cut it. So there’s no better time than now to

start optimising your health through gentle detoxification! There’s no need to embark on a 10-day juice fast to balance out the ‘naughtiness’ of Christmas. Just understand a few basic concepts about intelligent detoxification and you will cruise through summer without a case of indigestion to show.

HOW DO I CLEANSE? The trouble with most modern-day approaches to detoxification is that they
