SPOTLIGHT ON SOUTH EAST COAST FEATURE SPONSOR

KENT & MEDWAY THE NEW HOME FOR OFFSHORE WIND MANUFACTURING

The Kent CORE, one of the UK Government’s designated Centres for Offshore Renewable Engineering, offers a strategic location for the offshore wind industry being ideally positioned for rapid access to offshore wind opportunities in the North Sea, English Channel and wider European markets.

Kent already hosts three of the country’s most significant wind farm projects. Kentish Flats was one of the first offshore wind farm developments in the UK while Thanet Offshore and London Array are two of the world’s largest. Together these projects make Kent a leading location in Britain for operational development and the generation of renewable energy.

The Medway Superhub in north Kent offers 303 hectares to accommodate the manufacture, assembly, storage and distribution of blades, gearboxes, nacelles, towers and foundations for offshore wind turbines, together with other associated supply chain operations.

Included in this offer are two deep water port sites situated on opposite sides of the River Medway. The Port of Sheerness provides a 50 ha site with planning permission for an integrated wind turbine manufacturing facility and London Thamesport with 16 ha of development land plus additional operational land.

OPERATIONS & MAINTENANCE The Ports of Ramsgate and Whitstable, both established and growing O&M bases which have benefited from major investment in bespoke facilities by Vattenfall (Thanet Offshore, Kentish Flats) and London Array, have space to accommodate additional O&M business.

A deep talent pool of appropriate skills with key strengths in mechanical, electrical and electronic engineering is available and extensive local training is offered, including a highly successful industry supported apprenticeship scheme for offshore wind technicians at the Swale Skills Centre.

There is a strong presence of relevant supply chain companies and an extensive network of business support organisations to help them develop. A comprehensive supply chain database containing 695 categories has been developed and a growing web based directory of companies can be found on Kent’s website.
