calculation is how to deal with unsteadiness, i.e. the time- dependency of the flow.
Generally-speaking, technically interesting turbulent flows are always unsteady, i.e. how the flow field looks is time-dependent. often, however, these unsteady characteristics turn out not to be interesting because they fall out when averaged over technically relevant time periods and are not therefore significant for calculations. Problems can therefore often be considered as stationary and the calculations can be manageable.
