Farming O

Richard Concklin and Linda Concklin Hill in greenhouse at the Orchards of Concklin

n Wednesday, July 4, from 1

to 6 p.m., the com- munity is invited to celebrate the 300th anniversary festival at The Orchards of Concklin in Po- mona. Free activi- ties include music,

and eleven generations lat- er, the Concklins continue the tradition of harvest- ing 20 varieties of apples, as well as strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, currants, gooseberries and cherries, then mid-summer peaches, plums, nectarines, corn and tomatoes which is fol- lowed by two months of apple and pumpkin picking. Apple cider, award-winning apple cider donuts, pies, cookies and cakes are in production all year long. The Orchards of Concklin is one of a handful of farms

left in Rockland County and is reputed to be the 8th oldest family business in America.

Cost: Admission to all activities free. Grilled food will be available for purchase and the farm store and nursery will be open. Location: RT 45 at South Mountain Rd, Pomona. For more information, visit TheOrchardsOfConcklin.com. See calendar listing, page 41.

Birch School Opening in Rock Tavern this Fall: Open House June 13

T

he directors of Free Spirit

Nature Camp are excited to announce the September opening of the Birch School and Home School Re- source Center. This brand new center, located in Rock Tavern, offers full and part time school programs as well as home school classes and support for homeschooling families. They invite the com- munity to join them on Wednesday, June 13, at 7:30 p.m. for an open house. The Birch School will continue the Free Spirit tradition

of providing unique high-quality programs that parents have come to depend on by offering a completely individualized program where children move at their own pace, guided by experienced teachers. Students are encouraged to discover their own passions through collaborative projects and playful inquiry. These passions drive the students’ curiosity, leading them to strive to reach goals and master skills. “We are committed to educational alternatives. In ad-

dition to our daily school program, we provide services for parents who currently are homeschooling or considering it for their own family,” says Director Kate Fox. Fox adds, “there is still time to sign up for Free Spirit Nature Camp, a unique summer day camp for children ages 4 through 15 years located in Westtown that focuses on hands-on outdoor activi- ties such as hiking, nature study and cooperative games. The next open house will be on June 9 from 1 to 4 p.m.
