ILSA Chapter Happenings open to everyone at Miami Law.
Also in October, ILS teamed up with the school’s Entertainment and Sports Law Society to host a speaker event on international sports law. The speaker, Alessandro Oliverio, is founder of IS- portLaw in Rome, Italy. Mr. Oliverio discussed what steps students can take to enter a career in international sports law and unveiled his Rome internship program for U.S. law students. The pre- sentation explored various topics in international sports law, including: the International Olympic Committee (IOC)’s role as a UN Permanent Ob- server, the NBA players’ lockout of 2011, and the conflict between the tennis players union and the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP). This was a fascinating and enlightening resource for insight into the field of international sports law.
Another speaker event hosted by ILS during the fall semester of 2011 featured one of Miami Law’s most distinguished international law pro- fessors, Markus Wagner. Professor Wagner’s discussion related to a paper that he was work- ing on, entitled “Autonomous Weapon Systems: Legal, Ethical and Political Challenges.” His pre- sentation explored the international humanitarian law implications of the growing trend toward the deployment of autonomous weapon systems.
The presentation explored the ethical and po- litical challenges that the development of these weapons presents.
At the beginning of March, ILS was a proud co- sponsor of the law review symposium for Miami Law’s newly-established National Security and Armed Conflict Law Review (NSAC). The sym- posium explored the tragic reality of the use of child soldiers within the context of international law. The distinguished speakers included Profes- sor Mark Drumbl of Washington & Lee School of Law, Professor Saby Ghoshray of St. John’s Uni- versity School of Law, and Tchicaya Missamou, who was a former child soldier in Congo and has since gone on to become a United States Marine, a best-selling author, and the founder of the Hope For Congo Foundation. This was truly an eye-opening experience from a legal perspec- tive, but also from a humanitarian and policy per- spective as well.
Additionally this semester, ILS will be co-spon- soring, along with the Jewish Law Students As- sociation, a panel discussion regarding a possi- ble pre-emptive strike by Israel against Iran. This event will take place in early April and is sure to be a very informative and controversial discus- sion.
