ILSA Chapter Happenings KANSAS ILS
University of Kansas School of Law Lawrence, Kansas USA
Emily Disney, ILS Member 86
On February 16th, 2012 the University of Kansas School of Law chapter of ILS hosted the 5th An- nual Human Rights Lecture and International Re- ception. The vision for this event was to provide students a forum for networking and relationship building across the multiple disciplines of inter- nationally focused organizations in the Kansas City Metro Area. The International Reception hosted representatives from the International Trade Council of Kansas City, Honorary Consuls for South Africa, Taiwan, and Italy, as well as representatives of private law firms and multina- tional companies and human trafficking attorneys based in Kansas and Missouri. Over coffee and dessert these experts shared their experiences and advice on the various aspects on the field of international law with 70 students.
Following the reception Professor Henry Steiner, founder of Harvard Law’s Human Rights program, presented a lecture entitled Muslims in Europe: Multiculturalism, Cultural Clash, and Human Rights. Professor Steiner’s presentation spoke mainly of the issues surrounding the veil laws in France. Overall, the event was highly successful and great fun to host! KU’s International Law So- ciety would like to thank ILSA for their support in making the Human Rights Lecture possible this year.
Additionally, this semester the International Law Society had the opportunity to host events on International Oil and Gas Law, Careers in Latin America, as well as coordinating with other stu- dent groups an Inter-faith panel on Religion in America, and a “Pub Games” night. Further, ILS worked alongside administration to provide infor- mation sessions about the opportunities to study abroad during the semester or summer. The cap-
stone for the University of Kansas International Law Society 2011-2012 will take place in April with the annual ILS Wine Tasting. This event serves as both a fundraising opportunity as well as a cel- ebration of internationalism as the funds raised will benefit an international non-governmental or- ganization based in Kansas.
This has been a very productive year for the Inter- national Law Society, as it has sought to increase membership and opportunities for student in- volvement. ILS has broadened its programming to include aspects of both public and private in- ternational law, and career development strate- gies. Overall we welcome any opportunity to col- laborate with other ILS chapters and look forward to the coming school year!
MIAMI LAW ILS
Univ. of Miami School of Law Miami, Florida USA Ryan Propis, President
The ILS Chapter at the University of Miami School of Law has had a busy and exciting year as it continues to bring international programming to the forefront of Miami Law. Miami Law boasts a diverse faculty of distinguished practitioners of international law, along with numerous interna- tional LLM programs and international exchange and externship programs. These opportunities, combined with a location in one of the most di- verse and international cities in the world, make Miami Law a hub for international law.
Miami Law ILS strives to embrace these oppor- tunities by showcasing many different events and speakers. In October, ILS sent three representa- tives to International Law Weekend (ILW) in New York City. These representatives attended mul- tiple panel discussions, networked with other ILS Chapters and attendees, and brought back many resources to the law school. Upon return, these representatives hosted an ILW review discussion
