of the Prosecutors, Manuel Vásques, added that Rios Montt had, thus, “direct participation in the implementation of the plans.” Vásques also used the documentary “Granito: How to Nail a Dictator”, in which Rios Montt is interviewed and affirms that he was in control of the army. Another important document presented by the Prosecution is a col- lection of secret Guatemalan military documents, the Plan Sofia, which details the functioning of the chain of command during the Civil War.
During the hearings, Rios Montt declined to tes- tify and said that the goal of the judicial process should not be vengeance, but justice. He stated he was innocent of all crimes of which he was being accused, since he had not been on the bat- tlefield and therefore did not participate in any of the confrontations. The prosecution argued that there was extensive evidence that demonstrated that Rios Montt had knowledge of the actions of his army and should be held responsible for the crimes committed.
The Rios Montt hearing will begin in March 2012. If convicted, Rios Montt will face up to 30 years in prison.
