South Africans Charl Crous and Cameron van der Burgh also won gold medals in the 50 m backstroke, 100 m backstroke and 50 m breaststroke, 100 m breaststroke, respectively. Kenya’s 25-year-old swimmer Jason Dunford set a new GR in the 50 m butterfly and in the 100 m butterfly at 23.57 and 52.13 respectively. In the female category, there were exhilarating displays from established stars and debutants as well. South Africa’s Karin Prinsloo raked seven gold medals, while Roxanne Tammadge, also from South Africa, went home with five, as compatriot Suzaan van Biljon settled for four. The 2010 African Swimmer of the Year Mandy Loots of South Africa also showed what she was made off in the pan-African Games by winning three gold medals. Zimbabwe’s sportsperson and sportswoman of the year Kirsty Coventry was not left out. She went home with four gold while Egypt’s Farida Osman set a new record with her only medal of the competition in the 50 m butter- fly at 27.08. In the overall medal standing, South Africa finished with a total of 74 (33 gold, 23 silver and 18 bronze), followed down below by Tunisia with 14 (4 gold, 7 silver and 3 bronze), while Zimbabwe ranked third with 11 medals (4 gold, 6 silver and 1 bronze). African Junior Swimming Championships The 9th African Junior Swimming Championships, organised by the Nige- rian Swimming Federation, were held in the southern city of Port Harcourt between the 30th of November and 4th of December. Meant for swimmers under age 16, the events were attended by partici- pants from nine countries namely South Africa, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Nige- ria, Botswana, Mauritius, Algeria, Kenya and Senegal. It was an inspiring contest and an eye-opener to many athletes. South Africa won the competitions with a combined score of 1,456.50, with Zimbabwe following at 647.50 points while Namibia finished third with 615. Host team Nigeria gathered 511 to stay at fourth position. 2013 FINA World Junior Swimming Championships The Royal Moroccan Swimming Federation (FRMN) has been picked by FINA to host the 4th World Junior Swimming Championships, which will take place in August 2013.
