new systems at this year’s major Piscina BCN 2011 exhibition in Barcelona, with their UVARAY CF system for commercial pools and their low pressure TR2 UV range for residential pools, spas and water features.

The innovative UVARAY Cross Flow (CF) system, available from the end of November this year, has been developed over 18 months as a further addition to their UVARAY range, providing optimal ease of installation and covers flow rates from 20 to 830 m3/h. The CE approved system utilises a 316L stainless steel reactor, fitted with a DVGW approved UV sensor, reactor temperature sensor and an automatic ‘smart drive’ wiper system. The reactor also features quick release UV lamp connections making lamp replacement simple. The new system is cost effective offering high efficiency, easy low cost installation and maintenance.


Also on display for the first time is their new TR2 low pressure UV system specially designed for disinfection of small pools, spas, ponds and water features. The four TR2 models within the range covers flow rates up to 40 m3/h and are manufactured in UV inhibited polymeric materials making them suitable for pools utilising both salt water chlorinators or standard chemical dosing. The system offers reduced chemical consumption, improved algae control and water clarity along with superior bather comfort. The TR-2 range is simple to install and operate, provide low capital and running costs along with an 18 month UV lamp life.

One aspect of UV treatment that is frequently overlooked is that it can often save money. Bearing in mind that the awareness of the problems associated with chloramines in pool water is now so great that almost all pool operators have to handle the problem in one way or another. In the absence of UV treatment, one common method is to dilute with fresh water. The filters are back-washed in order to allow additional volumes of fresh water to be added. When this is done, there is the cost of water itself, but heat is lost in the backwash water and this creates an additional cost. Not everyone measures these costs accurately, so this information is not always available. One pool that did this was the Lloyd Elsmore Park Leisure Centre in Manukau in New Zealand. They monitored the costs relating to their Leisure Pool for two six month periods (before UV installation) and (after UV installation). The UV system is a Hanovia model PSP320 E1/8. These were their findings:

Although the number of bathers in the second period dropped by 1%, the decrease in both water and heating costs far outweighed this. In fact, the surprising result was that the total saving (approximately £39,000) over six months was three times the cost of the UV system. In other words, the UV system paid for itself in just two months, based on water and energy savings.


HANOVIA’S SWIMLINE UV SYSTEM AIMS TO LOWER OPERATING COSTS Providing lower capital costs alongside lower operating costs is seen by many manufacturers now to be the key to the even faster take up by swimming pool owners and managers. Hanovia’s


award-winning Photon UV systems, the next generation SwimLine UV system, is still new to the market but gaining in popularity. The system will be seen in Europe for one of the first times when it makes an appearance at the Piscina Barcelona show in October.


The launch comes after extensive research and pools trials and is re-engineered to provide lower capital costs and lower operating costs than previous UV systems.


It offers two fold protection for pool operators: water disinfection and removing combined chlorines and is incorporated into existing water treatment systems or can be included from the start into new builds. around the pool is also much more pleasant. Hi-tech sensors and a microprocessor controlled computer interface gives unprecedented control over the system – even from remote locations. Continuous UV monitoring and energy optimisation mean the system is more efficient and economical to run, while built-in alarms warn of low UV, power failures or other changes.
