AUSTRALIA GETS NEW NATIONWIDE POOL AND SPA ASSOCIATION

The swimming pool and spa industry in Australia has its own national association for the first time. The formation of the Swimming Pool & Spa Association of Australia Ltd (SPASA Australia) is being seen as a major step in being able to deal more effectively with the Federal Government.

Before the formation of SPASA Australia, the associations were state based and lacked a joint approach to Government in trying to deal with Australia-wide issues.

The state-by-state structure was seen as the major impediments in getting the ear of the Government. That fact has made it difficult to reach some bodies in an environment with increasingly harmonised national laws, and made it difficult to lobby on behalf of the industry. For this reason, there has long been a call for the formation of a national body. SPASA Australia will be the peak body for the swimming pool and spa industry nationally, bringing together the existing state associations under a federal body. Its main aim will be to act as the point of contact between the industry and the Commonwealth Government. The association will also aim to address important industry and community issues including: • Australian Standards and safety • Workplace occupational health and safety

• Water and energy conservation • National training and licensing standards

Every state SPASA president automatically becomes a director of the SPASA Australia board. The Board Chairman is Manfred Wiesemes with Brendan Watkins as Secretary. “This new association-of-associations brings together the SPASA organisations in New South Wales,

WAVES EVENT REFLECTS YOUNG AND FAST GROWING TRADE IN INDIA

A huge step forward in terms of an industry which is growing between 30 to 35% a year – that was the verdict on the first specialist pool and spa trade show held in New Delhi, India in the second week in August. The WAVES Pool, Spa and Bath International Expo was a sell out and while AstralPool were one of the main sponsors of the show, the event also attracted such well known European names as Waterco, Hayward, Procopi and Certikin. Organisers say the attendance exceeded expectations with a high number of visitors from all over India and abroad.

Exhibiting companies included countries such as USA, Spain, UK, France and Australia. The show was supported with a seminar programme covering a range of local and international pool and spa topics.

The show was a key event in the calendar for Certikin who launched Certikin Pools India Private Ltd two years ago to invest in the industry. Certikin’s International Business Manager Jo Ainsworth was at the Dehli show.

Muthu Selvam, Sales Director of Certikin’s India business said WAVES was a relatively small but well attended show which had made a mark on the trade and provided a platform for bigger shows in the future.

Certikin’s emphasis at the show was on general pool equipment, water features and irrigation. Muthu said the Indian market was still a very young industry with lots of growth. One of the issues for the industry was the need to develop knowledge and experience in all aspects from pool construction through to technology. The need to improve skills in the industry was the most important issue facing the fledgling trade.

Queensland, South Australia, Victoria and Western Australia,” Wiesemes said. “The industry contributes enormously to the national economy, and must be heard. SPASA Australia was formed because the industry recognised the need to address safety, environmental and regulatory issues in a coordinated manner. We also recognised that

the Commonwealth Government prefers to consult with national peak bodies on regulatory issues. “We believe that owning a swimming pool or spa is part of the lifestyle that Australians from all walks of life aspire to own and enjoy. The backyard pool is one of the most iconic of Australian images, even The Lodge has one.”

Wiesemes says that the board looks forward to working with the stakeholders and regulators to make sure the Australian dream of owning a pool or spa continues to be part of their lifestyle.

The formation of the national body does not affect existing relationships members have with their state associations.
