WorldNews APR 2011 SPN NEW ORLEANS TO RE-OPEN DAMAGED POOLS

WATER QUALITY PROBLEMS AS PAKISTAN POOL INDUSTRY BLOSSOMS

Swimming has finally started reaching the status of a major sport in Pakistan.

This change comes from a record number of new pools built all over the country particularly pools open to the public. This in turn has increased the number of competitions organised by the Pakistan Swimming Federation. Media coverage has also increased, turning swimming stars into well know sporting personalities – and the whole sport has now been booming for three years.

While the number of new pools grows every year, there are problems with maintenance, which includes filthy water and an inappropriate amount of chlorine in the water. The concern is that most public pools lack funds to maintain their pools adequately or do not bother to do so and change their unfiltered pool water once in a year. This untreated water causes ear, eye, and skin infection and deters people from swimming.

The Pakistan Swimming Federation’s oversight of public pool maintenance is being dealt with by drafting in European and Indian expertise in water management. A six month plan to install new filters and in larger pools UV systems started last November and 30 large public pools have now been given the new certification of purity. A training programme setting out clear rules on the use of chlorine is part of a Government policy to all pool owners and managers. A swimming federation spokesperson said: “Too many pools were built too quickly and the expertise in water management was just not available to keep up with the demand. It has been a priority to put this right and we are finally seeing some improvements so we can re assure swimmers about the quality of water.”

Twelve public swimming pools are finally set to be re-opened nearly six years after Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans. Five more pools are due to open in 2012, while a major community pool may open in 2013.

The US Federal Emergency Management Agency has approved the funding for a total replacement of the public pools often tearing down existing structures and replacing with new ones.

Vanessa Gueringer, of the

Community Voice, said getting all the pools open can’t happen soon enough.

With six pools in six different areas more than a year away, Gueringer said many demand the city provide alternative forms of recreation. “Not only will it help fight crime. I think something like this — it would give them something to do and something to look forward to.” The bid process for the 10 pools was due to be completed in March with construction starting in May.

PHOENIX SPAS SHUTS DOWN

Phoenix Spas, one of the best known names in United States hot tub manufacturing, specialising in low-cost hot tubs, has closed its operations after more than 20 years in business. The regional business was based in Anderson, California – 100 miles north of Sacramento. While the company has not formally announced the closing, sources at Phoenix have confirmed the shutdown is official. The manufacturer is now working to ensure that customers who still have a year or two left on their warranty will remain covered, according to Phoenix dealers.

TIMING IS PERFECT FOR INDIA’S FIRST POOL SHOW

India’s claim is that it is now the world’s fastest growing democratic economy. So it follows that the launch of the first swimming pool and spa exhibition in the country is being seen as a major event. The WAVES Pool / Spa / Bath International Expo is being held from 10 to 12 August 2011 at Pragati Maidan in New Delhi.

The event aims to unite the ‘wet wellness’ market and provide the industry’s top decision-makers with a forum to expand their businesses. The timing of the show couldn’t be better. Over the past decade, India has seen a surge in demand for swimming pools, home-spas and luxury baths. According to the Construction Association and Councils of India, the country’s construction industry market size is well over US$50bn. With thousands of new townships, developments, bungalows, hotels, resorts, and second homes springing up across the country, the luxury ‘wet wellness’ industry can hardly keep up! Thousands of new homes means thousands of swimming pools and

custom home-spas are being built across the nation.

“Our Indian division is very excited about the launch of the country’s first focused event and actually, we have been waiting several years for this. I view India as the fastest growing pool and spa market in the world and with the help of WAVES, it certainly has tremendous potential to become a global player in the pool and spa industry. We are excited about participating and look forward to having India introduced to the world,” said Pere Ballart, Director of AstralPool International, a division of Fluidra Group.

NEW ZEALAND STEPS UP WATER SAFETY ADVICE Water Safety New Zealand has reminded parents to be careful around water after a number of drownings so far this year. In the latest cases, a two year-old girl died after falling into a pool at Waiwera Thermal Resort and a four year-old boy also drowned in Northland after going into a water hole to save a ball.

General Manager of Water Safety New Zealand, Matt Claridge, says six pre-school children have drowned in one month which is the same number as for the whole of last year.

Mr Claridge says most young children drown in home swimming pools and it pays to be careful around water. “It’s a message for parents and caregivers that if you are near water children need to be within sight and preferably within reach, and if they’re in the water, mum and dad need to be in there too,” he said.

...AND IN THE US, A NEW TRADE SHOW CAMPAIGN STARTS The Consumer Product Safety Commission in the United States has been stepping up a promotion to involve the specialist trade with a ‘Pool Safely: Simple Steps Save Lives’ campaign. It is being promoted to the trade in the build up to the new spring and summer swimming season. Pool Safely wants retailers, dealers, manufacturers and suppliers to take the campaign to customers urging them to be safe around pools and spas. Last year a record number of pool accidents and drownings were reported in the US. The Pool Safely campaign has already taken part in trade shows in Atlantic City, Orlando and Arlington, Texas.
