Visitors to SPATEX were slightly up for 2011 but not enough to convince everyone that the show should stay in Brighton long term

Efforts to make changes to the annual SPATEX trade show in Brighton look like they may have to be put on hold for another year – not good news for some

‘TIME FOR A CHANGE’ PLEA REJECTED

t’s time for change – that was the key theme to come out from SPATEX after the 2011 event provided better attendance figures and a more positive atmosphere than in recent years but still fell short of expectations.

Attendance at the three day Brighton event in early February increased marginally from 2010 but still remains considerably down on visitor figures for 2007 and 2008.

This is being seen as the heart of the problem for the show which despite all the efforts, doesn’t seem to be able to deliver visitors in enough numbers.

The total attendance for trade visitors at 1,394, according to audited figures from WRS visitor analysts, was 90 more than last year but 600 less than the recent peak reached in 2007. Average attendance was 460 a day with the Sunday marginally the busiest.

Jamie Adams, Managing Director of Golden Coast returned to the 2011 event after a year’s absence. “Being really honest, I think the industry and therefore the show, is in a bit of a rut, perhaps partially due to complacency but it all seemed rather tired, with the same format year after year; it’s all become a little too comfortable. “I support the show but if we’re looking to grow and develop as an industry then it’s time for change;

we need to become more inspiring about the way we present ourselves. “The Piscine show in Lyon is a good example of what we should be aspiring to, it’s vibrant and energetic with a lot going on and as a result is seen by their pool and spa industry as an event not to be missed. “To go forward we have to become more professional at what we do as an industry so exhibitors and visitors come to our show with a purpose rather than just attending out of habit.
