71 GYM COMPLEX AIMS TO SAVE £55,000 BY SWITCHING TO CALOREX PUMPS

The Academy, at Harrogate, one of the country’s largest health complexes, wanted to get serious about its energy efficiency drive. The gym has taken delivery of six Calorex Pro Pac 90 units as part of a major energy- efficiency drive in what is believed to be the biggest air source heat pump project ever undertaken at a leisure facility in the UK or Europe.

After switching to the Calorex-powered system, designed and installed by Heffalump Energy, the venue is anticipating savings of about £55,000 per year on heating costs with carbon emission savings of 100 tonnes annually. With a cash boost in excess

is no industry standard when it comes to rating the output capacity of a swimming pool heat pump, so when specifying avoid being drawn down the route of a ‘12kW’ heat pump or a ‘15kW’ heat pump. Never be tempted to undersize a heat pump in order to be more price competitive. Always err on the side of caution.

“To enable fair and accurate comparison of respective performance, efficiency and noise ratings, the importer/distributor should be able to offer assurances that the publicised figures have been replicated in tests carried out in the UK and are truthful, accurate and representative.

“Prior to installation ensure there is a suitable mains electricity supply.

“We looked at all kinds of equipment, and undertook an in-depth study before, working with our customer, we agreed on air source heat pumps,” explains Mike Dare of Heffalump Energy, who designed the system with commissioning and technical support throughout from Calorex’s Mark Baldwin. “When it comes to heat pumps, we chose Calorex because we are looking for quality and reliability of product, good track records and good manufacturers with customer support — all very important when dealing with any commercial project.” Based near Doncaster, Heffalump Energy’s, Mike Dare

of £100,000 as part of the Carbon Trust’s interest-free loan scheme, payback on the capital cost will take just five years. Four Calorex Pro Pacs now heat the pool water and warm the changing rooms and other areas. Two additional Calorex Pro Pacs provide hot water for the changing rooms and heating system in another part of the venue while capturing additional heat recovery using exhaust air from a tumble dryer.

The electricity supply cable must be of sufficient size to cope with the rating of the heat pump and the cable length. If connecting into an existing sub distribution board within a pool plant room etc, it is possible that the existing supply cable between the main house and the plant room may be insufficient. Involve a qualified electrician. “All heat pumps produce air noise from the fan when operating. Avoid positioning heat pumps near bedroom windows or near neighbour’s boundaries.

“A swimming pool heat pump is not a labour intensive product to assemble or manufacture and a high percentage of the product cost relates simply to the value and quality of the components selected for use.

“Whilst product assembly in Far East countries may not be burdened by western labour rates, taxes and health and safety protocols, it is ultimately the use of low cost, locally manufactured, components, which facilitate a low price. “The laws of commerce dictate that, generally, you get what you pay for and, in the absence of in- depth knowledge, that remains a fair and reliable guide. “Assuming that continued inflation in China does not disrupt manufacturing base costs too much, it is reasonable to assume that many companies will continue to look to import and distribute Far East brands into the UK market and that this will be a long term scenario. “Increasingly more US and

European brands are also being promoted in the UK, albeit at a higher price and quality level. “It is difficult to predict how many different heat pump brands will ultimately be introduced and offered in the UK over the next few years, but all will be marketed on a similar basis of lower price and claimed superior performance. “We appear to be heading in a direction whereby all manufacturers seem to be claiming superior performance and lower noise levels than their competitors. This makes it all but impossible for a customer to assess the genuine and true characteristics of a particular brand. Products with good genuine specification could find themselves lost in a fog of unjustifiable and

Heffalump Energy confidently predicts it will save a typical spa or pool, of Harrogate’s size, between £45-60K per year on their heating, water and effluent bills through combined heating and ventilation systems with a typical pay-back average timescale between five to seven years, equating to about 35-45% savings on existing heating.
