SpOrt Olympic legacy plans published peTe haymaN


London 2012 will generate a number of sporting, economic and social benefits for the UK under new legacy proposals outlined by the government. Plans for the legacy from the


2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games has been made avail- able by the government, which sets out how it will maximise the event’s potential through four main areas: increas- ing grassroots participation; exploiting opportunities for growth; promoting commu- nity engagement; and the regeneration of East London. Although the new plans have been produced


Increasing grassroots participation is one of the key aims of the Games


by the government, a number of organisations will be involved in the delivery of the legacy. In the new document, the government said:


“It is important that we are able in the future to assess the benefits of the Games and their


legacy. For that reason, we have engaged a con- sortium from the private and academic sectors, led by Grant Tornton, to carry out a meta- evaluation of the 2012 Games’ benefits and legacy, which will brings together evidence relating to the benefits of individual legacy initiatives into a coherent whole.”


New sports and culture strategy for Ipswich peTe haymaN


Ipswich Borough Council has confirmed that its new strategy for sports and culture for the city is to be put out to consultation. Te new Cultural Strategy sets out a number of aims, including the completion of a £3.4m


investment programme at Crown Pools and an expanded arts festival. Other targets include the provision of £1m


to revitalise Broomhill Lido; the creation of a sports village at Gainsborough sports centre; and the development of a new arts quarter.


LCCC stands firm over ground challenge peTe haymaN


Lancashire County Cricket Club (LCCC) will continue with work on its Old Trafford ground in Manchester, despite a legal challenge from Derwent Holdings. A judicial review is being


sought by Derwent Holdings – owner of the nearby White City shopping park – over Trafford Council’s decision to back the £70m scheme. In September, LCCC was


told the government had decided not to call in the local authority’s decision to approve the development. Working with Ask Developments, the cur-


rent £32m investment phase is now underway to deliver new pitches, two new grandstands and player and media facilities.
