Lucky Numbers: 10, 20, 31 The ups and downs of caregiving

By Paul Bridgewater For the first time in history,

four-generation families are becoming common. In many families, spouses or siblings are caring for each other well into their eighties and nine- ties.

In others, caregiving falls

to young adults whose family members are battling chronic conditions and diseases that tend to surface in midlife. And an entire generation of baby boomers will soon expe- rience the impact of aging on their parents, if they haven’t already. Quite likely, boomers will be a generation of caregiv- ers.

We’re in the midst of a

“longevity revolution” where people grow old. We’re no longer a society where people grow up and die. For some, family caregiving may mean simply sharing meals and helping with chores. For others, caregiving may require much more time, energy and financial support. Ultimately, however, caregiving can mean helping others through sick- ness, often until death.

At the Detroit Area Agency

on Aging we believe some of the answers, guidance, re- sources and comfort for family caregiving come from other caregivers. Few individuals can anticipate their family caregiving needs, but all of us

can learn about the diseases and frailty that may trigger the need for care.

At 10 a.m., Saturday, Nov.

27, “The Senior Solution” radio show on 107.5 FM WGPR will present a special broad- cast with caregiving strate- gies from Viki Kind, author of “The Caregiver’s Path to Com- passionate Decision Making: Making Choices for Those Who Can’t.”

Viki Kind is a clinical bio-

ethicist, medical educator and hospice volunteer in Califor- nia. As a bioethicist, she is trained to explore the implica- tions of certain medical pro-

cedures, genetic engineering, and care of the terminally ill. She has also been a caregiver for many years for four mem- bers of her family.

In all of her

work, including her interviews for “The Senior Solution,” Viki helps people find the courage to do the right thing.

“The Caregiver’s Guide to

Compassionate Caregiving” guides the reader through the difficult process of making decisions for those who are losing or have lost the ability to think. The book is filled with practical help and solutions, and it is a resource for caregiv- ers, patients and healthcare professionals alike. Equally helpful is the information on Viki Kind’s website and blog: www.kindethics.com and www.thecaregiverspath.com.

If you are dealing with

someone who has Alzheimer disease, dementia, strokes, brain injuries, mental illness, developmental delays or other mental limitations, I hope you l tune in to “The Senior Solu- tion” on Saturday, Nov. 27.

In

five separate segments, Viki Kind will cover general ques- tions about the caregiving journey; what caregivers need to know about their new deci- sion making responsibilities; how to help those without ca- pacity; how to deal with the healthcare system; and how to face end-of-life issues.

The new playground’s

design is based on drawings created by children who par- ticipated in a Design Day event in June.

The playground build also

included a Family Fun Station featuring arts & crafts, games and activities for families and children throughout the day.
