Foreword by The Colonel in Chief, HRH The Prince of Wales

The Mercian Regiment is now beginning its third year since Formation and, while I am immensely proud of the Regiment’s achievements in this short time, I know your success on operations has come at a considerable cost. I can so well imagine the unbearable anguish faced by those families who have lost loved ones - my heart goes out to you all. To those among you who have been wounded, I can only hope that you are able to make a swift and full recovery...

I have been fortunate enough to have visited or presented Operational Service medals to all three Regular Battalions and I very much look forward to doing the same for the 2nd Battalion, later this year, when they return from Afghanistan. On each occasion I have been consistently impressed by your courage, commitment and professionalism and I am delighted to see that morale remains high. This all bodes well for the future of the Regiment.

The 1st Battalion distinguished itself on their difficult, but successful operational tour in Iraq last year helping to keep the peace, patrol the borders and prepare the country for the return of governance. I have heard excellent reports of the 2nd Battalion’s activities - on their third operational tour in Afghanistan in six years - where they are continuing to uphold the Regiment’s fine reputation. The 3rd Battalion is now settled in Germany having completed its tour as Land Warfare Centre Battle Group, where it has been responsible for assisting with the training of the bulk of the British Army. The 4th Battalion, still the largest Territorial Infantry Battalion in the Army, has supported and reinforced the Regular Battalions stoically, loyally and without fail since Formation and is still doing so now in Afghanistan with some 130 soldiers in theatre. Their devotion and professionalism are beyond question and I am full of admiration for them.

The Mercian Regiment is, above all, a close-knit family regiment drawn as it is from the six counties astride the Heart of England. Our local links are fundamental to our ethos and we must never forget the support we receive from the wider Regimental Family, our Cadet Detachments who proudly wear the Mercian cap badge, the Regimental Association Branches around the world, and the local government and institutions who all do so much on behalf of the Regiment. Nor should we forget the invaluable support of families and friends who keep the home fires burning when the Battalions are away. They all play a vital part in maintaining our ethos and I can only salute them for their incredible stoicism.

I would like to congratulate all of you - Regular Army, Territorial Army, Cadet or Family - on everything that has been achieved in the first two years since Formation and to send everyone in my Regiment, wherever you may be, my warmest good wishes and my particular gratitude for your selfless service.
