BARKER Fred Cpl


In January 2008. He served with 1st Bn The Staffordshire Regiment in Berlin and completed his service in Colchester in the Families Office, where he was a much liked individual.


BATES Frank Pte 22849753


The yobs broke off and the band continued their impeccable performance.


BRADBURy Roy William Pte 23661554


Of Kirkby Woodhouse on 25 January 2009 aged 70. He enlisted into The Sherwood Foresters in 1959 and spent the majority of his service as a member of the Mortar Platoon of the 1st Battalion in Malaya, Northern Ireland and UK.


BULMORE Francis


Of Tamworth in June 2008. He enlisted into The South Staffords and later served with KSLI and RMP. He was a regular visitor to the Staffordshire Regiment Museum.


Of Worcester on 24 August 2008 aged 75. Originally a member of 7th Battalion The Worcestershire Regiment, Frank had been a member of B Company 1st Battalion Mercian Volunteers since the beginning. He played football and cricket for the 7th Battalion.


BENNETT Ronald


Of Blackpool on 22 December 2008 aged 77. He served for 19 years in 1st South Staffords and afterwards in 1st Bn The Staffordshire Regiment from 1950 until 1970. He was originally from Pleck in Walsall and he enlisted into The Mercian Brigade at Lichfield on 13 April 1950. He served in UK, Korea, Hong Kong, Germany, East Africa, Muscat, British Honduras and Berlin. On leaving the service, he worked for Royal Mail in Walsall before transferring to Blackpool.


BENTON David Anthony “Taff”


Of Wednesfield on 4 January 2009 aged 43. David served in HQ Company 1st Battalion Mercian Volunteers.


BERESFORD Jack


Of Stoke-on-Trent on 3 January 2009 aged 72. Jack served in 1st North Staffords in the 1950’s and was a member of Stoke Branch of the Regimental Association.


BOTTOMLEy William Cpl


Of Burton upon Trent on 11 August 2008 aged 80. Bill did National Service with the RAF and then joined the 6th North Staffords in 1950 as a Bandsman playing the trombone; he served later with the 5/6th North Staffords and The Mercian Volunteers, completing his service in 1988 with 3rd Bn The Staffordshire Regiment (V). After retiring from the Territorial Army, he continued to play with the Band as an unpaid honorary member for a further ten years. In civilian life he worked for Ind Coope Brewery in Burton-upon-Trent in the Ale Stores. He was a no-nonsense man and, on one occasion when the band had been performing, a group of yobs tried to ruin the performance by marching within the ranks and taunting the band in the process. This went on all afternoon so, when the band halted away from the performance area, Bill broke ranks, grabbed the ringleader, frog-marched him away and introduced him to a nearby tree.

Of Crewkerne, Somerset, on 31 July 2008 aged 82. Timothy was commissioned into The South Staffordshire Regiment.


CHAPMAN Roger James Cpl


January 1943 and granted an Emergency Commission into The Sherwood Foresters on 22 May 1943 following his father, Lt Col F D Collen MC, who served in the Regiment in World War I. He was promoted Lt on 22 Nov 1943 and Temp Capt on 29 June 1946. He served with the 1st Battalion in North Africa in 1943 and then 2/5th Battalion as Pl Comd in C and D Companies. He was a Company Commander during the Salerno Landings and he returned to the 1st Battalion on 13th November 1945. He was re-Commissioned in 1947 into The Royal Artillery, serving in Germany, Edinburgh, Hong Kong, Korea (1951 – 53), Greenock (1954), Staff College (1955), BAOR (1951 – 53) and Munsterlager (1958 – 60). He retired in 1961. After leaving the Army, he became Sales Manager for Ferranti Radar/Inertial Systems from 1961 to 1986. His hobbies included Golf, Fishing and Sailing.


COLLINS Sydney


Of Tenbury Wells on 16 August 2008. He served with 1st South Staffords in the Chindit Campaign in Burma in 1944.


COLQUHOUN John Cpl 22965192


Of Tamworth in January 2009 aged 64. He enlisted as a boy soldier in 1960 going on to serve with 1st Bn The Staffordshire Regiment; his eighteen years service included the Battalion’s tours in Dover, Kenya, Berlin, Osnabruck, Belize, Colchester and three Northern Ireland Op Banner Tours (North Armagh 1972, Londonderry 1974 and Belfast 1976). He was a likeable character and well known in the Regiment.


COLLEN Frank David Maj 276862


Of Long Eaton, Derbyshire, on 9 January 2009 aged 73. He began his army career as a National Serviceman with the Royal Army Service Corps in 1953 serving in Malaya until 1956 when he left the Army. He re-enlisted in 1958 into 1st Bn The Sherwood Foresters and served until 1964 being stationed in Malaya, Northern Ireland and UK.


CONNELLy John Garside Pte 14663291


Of Edinburgh on 22 April 2009. Born on 13 October 1923 in London, he enlisted as a soldier (4986829) in Nottingham in 1941 and was sent to Lincoln on 9 March 1942 for training; he was posted to 166 OCTU on 22


Of Clifton, Nottingham on 13 October 2009 aged 84. He enlisted at Gosforth Park, Newcastle, on 19 August 1943 and became a driver with 2nd Battalion The Sherwood Foresters seeing service in Italy and Palestine. It was in Palestine when on duty as a driver with the Brigade Commander that his vehicle was blown up. He continued on his journey and later received first aid at a Guards’ Dressing Station. He was discharged in 1947. In civilian life, he was employed as bus driver, handyman for the TA and a Janitor at Rediffusion.
