couple of days meaning that we soon reached the limit of the snow line and our Mountain Leader Training. Some of the lads struggled at first with the navigation but, after a few days, most had got to grips with it and the lessons had been learnt. After four days on the hills, people were ready for some light relief and the decision was made to head for Munich. Unfortunately, we arrived on a public holiday and few of the shops were open but we sent out some quality recces during the day and soon we had a number of fine establishments to spend our Euros in. We headed back to Wertach the next day with some feeling the worse for wear but ready for the next week.

That week started with rock climbing and, despite some of the party being somewhat nervous (I shall not name Cpl Zecca or Ptes Hamer and Parker here for fear of embarrassing them), everybody completed all the climbs and abseils. The final day of activity was for most the highlight with the

group moving to instruction under a very German civilian called Steffan for the high rope course. This again saw some struggling with the heights but for the most it was the highlight of the trip and a good way to end the exercise. After that, it was back to Haus Magnus for some good old post-ex admin and our final night in the bar before trusting the Satnav and German drivers to get us to our flights the next day.

Freefall Parachuting in Germany

1 Platoon led a two week freefall parachuting course in Germany in autumn 2008. Many soldiers overcame personal fears to achieve freefall parachuting qualifications. The trip was enhanced by soldiers being allowed to experience some of the delights of serving in Germany during their weekend off. It still amazes me how much can be spent by a soldier in one weekend of cultural indulgence! There may be one or two volunteers for a posting to the 3rd Battalion when they move to Germany in 2009….

An awesome experience was enjoyed by all who took part except for Cpl Brown from 3 Platoon who decided to break his ankle on landing after his first descent. The two weeks saw the further development of the Mercian Eagles parachute display team - started by Lt Dixon and C Company a year earlier. It was an excellent AT opportunity and one that mirrored the work hard, play hard ethos of the Battalion.
