Crich Memorial Tower The Regimental Pilgrimage – Sunday 5th July 2009

The weather was kind this year and the crowds turned out in large numbers. Not only were The Worcestershire Regiment, The Sherwood Foresters and The Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters Regiment much in evidence but we were delighted to see many from the Associations of The 22nd (Cheshire) Regiment, The Staffordshire Regiment and The Mercian Volunteers with their families. The Service, led by The Bishop of Repton, was particularly poignant coming so soon after the death of LCpl Kieron Hill (whose family was present) and less than twenty four hours after the death of Pte Robert Laws both of the 2nd Battalion. The Mayors had all assumed their appointments only recently and very few had attended the Pilgrimage before: all expressed their admiration for the Tower and for the ceremony and for the attendance by some many of the regiment and their families. Although no Colours were on Parade, the 17 Association Standards from all of the Mercian Regimental Associations more than made up for this with a splendid display of loyalty and Drill.

Some months ago, Mr Roy Crump organised the raising of money for benches at the National Memorial Arboretum; he had money left over which he used to replace a worn out bench at Crich. Mr Steven Dobb, ex-WFR, has been the Warden at Crich for some three years and has put in an enormous amount of work in that time as those who attended this year's Pilgrimage will have noticed. The grass is well tended, the gardens are smart and colourful and everything generally is immaculate. He and his wife erected a marquee on the lawn of the Warden's cottage where they hosted a very successful tea shop.
