LAWS Robert George “Robbie” Pte 30034910


Of Derby on 26 December 2008 aged 41. He enlisted into The Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters Regiment in 1986 and served with the 1st Battalion Signals Platoon in Northern Ireland and as a UN peacekeeper in Cyprus.


LITTLEWOOD Peter Maj MBE


Commissioned into the Gloucestershire Regiment, he served with 3 STAFFORDS (V) in Wolverhampton from June 1988 until January 1990.


LUCAS Sydney Maurice


Of Bromsgrove on 4 July 2009 aged 18. Born on 1 March 1991, Robbie undertook basic training at the Army Foundation College, Harrogate, before moving on to the Infantry Training Centre in Catterick. After completing the Combat Infantryman’s Course in March 2009, he was posted to The Mercian Regiment joining B Company of the 2nd Battalion on Op Herrick 10 south of Garmsir in Helmand Province on 11 May. Pte Laws was killed whilst operating under command The Light Dragoons Battlegroup during Op Panchai Palang. During training, he achieved Best Shot on the Light Machine Gun. On joining the Battalion, he quickly became known for his mischievous sense of humour and cheeky wit which endeared him to his Platoon Sergeant. He showed all the best qualities of a soldier: an ability to adapt and learn, strength of character and determination. He was excited and eager to deploy to Afghanistan and this only a few days after his 18th birthday. His CO said: “He was a warm and cheerful young man who mucked in when there was work to be done and quickly made friends. Robbie’s falling has taken a good soldier from us - a man who was not afraid to endure hardship and to show the courage to fight the enemy.” Robbie enjoyed his snooker and he was a talented swimmer.


LEE Patrick Sean 24779839


The Sherwood Foresters at Blida in May 1943 and was with the battalion in the Salerno Landings where was severely wounded by mortar shrapnel and gunshot. He was evacuated to Northwood Hospital, Middlesex, and was medically discharged in 1944. He returned to work for his pre- war employer, Boots, as a packer and warehouseman until retirement in 1984. He was President of the Ilkeston Branch of WFRA throughout the 1980s and 90s and was also a member of Long Eaton British Legion.


Of Rye, Australia, on 4 November 2008 aged 108. He enlisted into The Sherwood Foresters in August 1918 and trained in UK but the War ended before he could be sent overseas; he was demobilised shortly afterwards. In 1928, he emigrated to Australia and enlisted into 2/1st Machine Gun Battalion (Australian Forces) at the outbreak of the Second World War. He transferred to duties guarding German and Italian POWs who were being shipped to Australia.


MANNION Stanley Joseph Pte 5732570


Of Coventry on 17 November 2008 aged 83. Born in Coventry on 10 December 1924, he enlisted at the age of 15 prior to the outbreak of WWII by giving a false age. He served with The Green Howards from 3 August 1940 to 12 February 1942, 1st Battalion The Worcestershire Regiment in Burma at Kohima and at Norton Barracks between 13 February 1942 and 5 March 1946, The Duke of Wellington’s Regiment from 6 March 1946 to 11 June 1947 and again with The Green Howards from 12 June 1947 to 31 March 1948. After leaving the Army, he was a miner, builder, car worker and Union representative and he boxed professionally; he formed Willenhall Amateur Boxing Club in 1958 where, initially, he was the coach and was then on the committee for 40 years.


MARDELL Frank William Pte 4986905


Of Beeston, Nottingham, on 21 January 2009. He enlisted at Lincoln in January 1942 and joined the 70th (Young Soldiers) Battalion The Sherwood Foresters. In August, he was posted to HQ 9 Corps at Swaffham, Norfolk, with which he served in Tunisia and Algiers. He joined 2/5th


120 October 2009 MARTIN John Henry


Of Snareshill, Wolverhampton, on 9 June 2008 aged 82. He joined The South Staffordshire Regiment in October 1944 and served until April 1967.


MEADS James Maj


Of Widemouth Bay, Cornwall on 23 May 2009. He was commissioned into The Royal Army Ordnance Corps as a regular officer and joined 3rd Battalion The Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters Regiment (V) on retirement.


MILLAR Arthur Pte 4975767


Of Coddington, Newark on 25 October 2008 aged 89. He enlisted into The Sherwood Foresters on 13 March 1938 and saw action with the 8th Battalion in Norway in 1940. After evacuation, he remained with the 8th Battalion in Northern Ireland and UK before being posted to The Royal Engineers in March 1944. He was wounded whilst in Egypt but continued to serve until the end of the War, being discharged in August 1946.


MILLS Arthur


Of West Bromwich on 12 May 2008 aged 85. He served with 2nd South Staffords. He was a member of the West Bromwich Branch of the Regimental Association.
