Headquarter Company by Maj R A Goodwin

OC Maj R A Goodwin CSM WO2 (CSM) A Jones CQMS CSgt Pollitt

HQ Company has been as busy as it always has been, with the Battalion’s recovery from Op TELIC 11 and recent arms plot from Alma Barracks to Marne Barracks, Catterick Garrison in Aug 2008. The Company has now settled into its new location nestled in just outside the Garrison next to the A1 and hope that this will be our last move for a while. After a spot of well deserved summer leave HQ Coy continued to support the Battalions forecast of events ensuring the Companies had everything they needed to support their low level training.

The Pre-Deployment training (PDT) kicked off in the New Year with three six week Company deployments to the Falkland Islands, with each department in HQ Coy providing manpower in order that the Falkland Island Resident Infantry Company (FIRIC) deployed fully established, enabling them to carry out their duties more of

which you will read more about in the Department notes. The Company has been extremely busy preparing for the Combined Inspection Week (CIW) and planning for our deployment to Kenya, as part of Ex Grand Prix in September 2009.

Finally, there have been a lot of changes in the Company. Maj Alan Ankers handed the Company to the Quartermaster Maj Ronnie Goodwin for safe keeping until a suitable candidate could be found to pick up the reigns. He moves on promotion to Lt Col as the SO1 Customer Liaison DE Ops (N). Our congratulations go to Alan on his promotion a phenomenal achievement to promote through the ranks from Pte soldier to Lt Col - we wish him and his family all the best for the future and good luck in his new appointment. WO2 ‘Ed’ Waring has moved on to takeover as the RQMS and is thanked for all his support managing the

1 MERCIAN SPS DETACHMENT

RAO: Capt Greenfield RAWO: WO2 Haimes

This has been another busy year for the Staff and Personnel Support Detachment (SPS Det) with our second unit move in 12 months and the preparation for Joint Personnel Administration Full Operating Capability (JPA FOC).

As always, the SPS Det prove continuously that they are more than ‘just clerks’ and have had many sporting and military successes over the past year.

The Battalion (Bn) Rounders team (all but one member was SPS) were runners up in the 2nd Division (2 Div) Rounders Championships. This was a great day and considering many of the players had not played competitive rounders before, the result was one to be proud of.

We also entered a team into the Adjutant Generals Corps (AGC) Triple Crown competition in May 08. With the majority of the Det still deployed on Operation TELIC 11, we could only muster a team of 4 to enter the 12 mile March & Shoot element of the

The Mercian Eagle

competition. The hours of training on a wet and windy Catterick training area paid off and the team completed the course in high spirits.

We also have various members of the Det that have performed well as individuals in sporting events throughout the year.

Corporal (Cpl) Tordoff was selected to join the AGC Ladies Biathlon Team which was a huge commitment to undertake but one which she relished. After pre-season training in the Harz Mountains in Germany, the team deployed to Norway, Austria and France to train for and participate in various competitions at Div and Army level. Cpl Tordoff narrowly missed out on being selected to participate in the Army Championships but as a novice competitor she performed extremely well and should be a credible competitor in years to come.

Private (Pte) Crighton has competed in a large number of events this year. At unit level he represented the Bn at the

2 Div Athletics Championships and also in the Brigade Navigation Exercise. He has also competed in the AGC swimming championships and has been selected to represent the Army in water polo.

On a professional front, Cpl Kerr was awarded a Commander SPS 1 (UK) Armoured Division Commendation in Dec 08 for his personal and professional contribution to the Det and the Bn; an achievement that he should be extremely proud of.

The Det continue to work hard for the Bn when consistently faced with the realities of under manning and an increased work load whilst we find our feet with JPA. It is to their credit that they juggle their workload to ensure they get the most out of their time in the Army and get involved in sports and other non-deskbound activities. It would be a poor recruiting tool to reduce the life of a Military Administrator to one that is all work.

Rear Party during OP Telic 11 as CSM HQ Coy. WO2 ‘Bullets’ Jones has stepped into the breach and has quickly made his mark. We welcome our new RCWO WO2 ‘Chris’ Marsden to the Regiment who has quickly proved he is the master of fine dining and in a short time he has ensured our soldiers quality of food is outstanding. This, under “Pay as you Dine” is a fantastic achievement. Our OC LAD has also changed over and we have said farewell to SSgt Andy Lewin who was posted to Germany and welcome in SSgt Carl Jones to all things technical. We look back and thank anyone who has worked with HQ Company over the last twelve months and say hello and welcome to our new arrivals. On a personal note the level of commitment and professional support provided by HQ Company has been fantastic and I would like to thank everyone in HQ Coy for your support.
