Clockwise from above: Upside down thrills in the main park; La Lumine restaurant; accommodation at Gold River

Lunch at Vinosfera in the Mediterranean zone was an array of tapas washed down with some fruity wines from nearby vine- yards. It was hardly the fast food I was expecting to find here.

Gourmet-minded clients would also be impressed by the sleek La Lumine restaurant in the Beach Club. Hors d’oeuvres of blue cream cheese on squares of quince jelly and shots of white-bean puree with tomato compote set the tone for an exceptional menu, which put a contemporary twist on traditional Catalan recipes. Floor-to-ceiling windows give diners a great view over the inky waters and moonlit beach. The Beach Club also boasts seven swimming pools and a chill-out zone with massage facilities. Clients seeking a little culture and a slice of authentic Spanish life should venture beyond the resort to nearby towns, such as

historic Tarragona. Only a 20-minute drive from Gold River, it is home to a 12th-century cathedral and a market selling everything from Virgin Mary statuettes and incense to

second-hand books and jewellery. I joined the locals in enjoying a cafe con leche in a pavement cafe in one of the squares, before pottering about the ruins of a Roman amphitheatre.

Playing a round

Back at the resort, a golf lesson on the pristine 18-hole Greg Norman course was another reminder of the diversity of the resort’s appeal. Although by no means a natural, with some expert guidance from a pro instructor, I was soon driving the ball more than 100m in the practice centre. I had been dubious that PortAventura could live up to its self-professed claim of having wide-ranging appeal. But after a fun-filled weekend of gourmet food, golfing and local culture – completely child free – I had to admit they were right.
